Ill try to make this story as short as possible. I live in CT, and though its not unbearably hot here, it does get pretty uncomfortable.

My roomate and I live together in a 3 bedroom house. On the first unbearably hot day or the year (like 88-89 degrees) we didnt have AC yet, but it was cool the night before, so i opened all the windows, had window fans sucking cold air in, and when i woke up at like 8 i closed all the windows trapping the cool air inside.

My friend comes over at about 1 or 2 pm and comments to me how nice it is in my place compared to outside. We then went downstairs and were watching TV, when my idiot roomate opens the door to the basement, and yells, "why did you close all the windows and shut the blinds!?", i said um because its fucking 90 outside and its cool in here. HE then says its gonna be like a greenhouse and get hot, and we need to get a "cool breeze" in the place to keep it cold. He then goes on to open every fucking window in the place, and the temp goes from about 70 to 90 in a half hour.

He put his AC in the window the next day, and i thought this would solve the problem - because to any person with an eight of a brain knows - when your have the AC on - close the windows. At this point i havent put my AC in or gotten the one in the main living room in yet either. I hear him sleeping in his room with the AC on. He then turns it off and immediately opens the window (90 outside). I said what the hell are you doing? HE said i need to get FRESH AIR in here. I said WTF you just ran that thing for hours and now your letting all the cold out. He is just fucking stubborn and doesnt understand.

Ive tried to explain that if its hotter outside than it is inside - eventually the temps will be the same... I told him a "breeze" really doesnt change the temp at all, and only makes the house hotter quicker.

Hell look at the forecast and see temps in the 80's and say "oh great get to open the windows!" Fucking moron.

He works third shift, and right now ive got the AC blasting because he let it get to 81 inside here today. The house will be ~73 when he gets home and i know exactly what the moron is gonna do when he gets in at 7. Open all the windows and blinds.......

Ive tried to explain things logically and without yelling, but he just doesnt understand how heat works. I also pointed out how much fucking moisture hes letting in, and jesus christ is it humid right now in CT. Almost to a point where you cant breathe.

I think im gonna tell him im not paying the electric bill is he keeps doing this shit. Running the AC and then opening the windows is just wasting it. I dont know what else to do. Hes an ok guy besides that. Hes super OCD about stuff, but i can deal with that. I cant deal with having to lock myself in my room with the AC on because the house is 100 degrees.

yea i know, but seriously, hes so thick headed. How can you run the AC for hours, and then immediately open the windows to let the "Fresh" 90 degree air in. Goddammit

Yeah, that must really suck. Hopefully, he'll be persuaded to leave the windows shut.
If not, there's only a couple more months of warm weather.

I posted before you, and STILL had time to do donuts in your front yard in my M3, and nail your mom before you decided to show up.
Straight ballin'!

*looks outside*
*rubs chin*
Are you a manlet? That's the only reason you'd need a m3

Don't know if it'll work but try simple logic with him. Next time, ask him to leave the windows closed and have him time how long it takes to reach 80F. Then the next time, have him do the usual and open the windows, time how long it takes to get to 80F.

90F isn't hot.

But you're right about the windows shit. Keep em closed in the day, open em at night when it cools.

LOL.

You don't know how AC works, do you?

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL STFU. Ever hear of the open and closed lever, switch or button?

Here is a hint since you don't know shit about air conditioners. One recirculates the air and the other brings in fresh outside air. Are you smart enough to figure out which one does what?

So many dumb people think if you open the windows even though it's hotter outside, will magically cool the place down.

My parents were terrible for that when I lived there. It's freaking +25 out and she has the patio door wide open. My dad is downstairs with the fireplace on... in middle of freaking summer! Sometimes they even had the AC and fireplace going at the same time.

LOL.

Lot of AC units actually do suck in fresh air. Smarter ones have dampers that only open if it's colder outside though. But in commercial buildings think they're constantly sucking in fresh air. Seems to me it's not the most efficient way but guess with lot of people packed in a building you need a better fresh air exchange. When we had forest fires here it did not take long for the smoke to get into our building. In our case they had to manually go shut all the dampers. Was not very comforting walking into the equipment room and smelling smoke.

A home unit normally wont have a fresh air intake though, but technically it's sucking heat out of the house through the refrigerant. it's just not changing the air itself.

Portable units tend to suck air in the house, but for the wrong reason. It's pushing hot air out after cooling the compressor, and naturally hot outside air gets sucked into the house by any cracks and crevices. I fixed that by adding an intake on mine so the compressor/condenser portion is a closed system. Much more efficient.

Vent is a pretty common setting on a window air conditioner. You switch to "fan only" and open the vent to pull in fresh air.

You can open the vent while it's in "cool" mode to bring in some fresh air for a few minutes.

It definitely helps to exchange the air in the room.

I doubt the units are full recirc anyway. They probably run at like 3/4 recirc to keep the room from becoming unbearably dry.

Start a contest. Allow him to run the thermostat for 2 weeks doing it his way. Check the power meter and get a reading. After two weeks, note the reading and then you do it your way. At the end, compare readings.

My wife was one of these thermostat nazi’s and if I was going to touch it, either up or down a degree I had better offer justification and cause. She didn’t grasp the concept of ‘set back’. Anyway, we tried the A/C her way and then my way and, no, she never admitted my way was better, but at least I get to operate the thermostat when I want now.

1. Failure for having a roommate.
2. A hard punch to the chest and then an ultimatum always worked for me.
