Oh yeah and UCLA is sooo horrible. XD

I'm getting sick and tired of this new high school generation of college-appeasing activities. these kids devote themselves to hours of bulls**t e.c that they wouldn't have done if there was no ncentive of college admissions..

It gets ridiculous how kids are just allowed to sign up for a dozen AP courses and hold an 3.9 with cruising Bs.

My school won't even let you in the honors program if don't meet a certain academic requirement. HONORS, not AP!

I wait for the future when success is not dictated by bloated GPAs and undeserved scores.

Ivy league is incredibly overrated. 5 family member attended (yeah, I'm a name dropping) and they're all complete idiots.

Got any backups? Getting into those highest tier schools is never easy. They have to reject just about everyone that applies (sometimes arbitrarily).

I have to recommend the good state schools, you can get the same experience and as good an education for half the price (you just won't have the special name on your degree; big deal, if you put in the same amount of work you'll be just as marketable)

oh yeah..rejection..

suck it up you sissy. no one is going to care where you went 10 years from now.

my @sshole father went to CMU and UChicago...and he's a LOSER! Those who are obsessed with college to the point of making a thread about it need to wake up. I'm only in high school but still beginning to see how kids are stalking the teachers for recommendations and extra points. it's quite amusing actually...

Sorry to hear that man...i know you were looking forward to attending the school. There are others...good schools out there. Just keep moving forward and do well and show yourself that you can still succeed without them.

As for your transferring question, it is very doable. Study hard your first year, extra hard, and try to do something most college students don't do until later years (research, internship etc) and you have a fair shot of transferring to your school of choice. Good luck

personally, I like to just give in, dwell on it non-stop, and wallow in my own misery for a couple days.

and then I get up, brush myself off, and move on.

That's because I am.

Solid essay and decent E.C can persuade admissions officers...

Plus, the schools I'm aiming for aren't general (i.e, all applicants are in the same boat regardless of desired department).

Math is overrated anyways. Friend of mine got into Stanford and UCLA with a 3.6 GPA and 2100 SAT. He had an excellent personal statement, missioned e.c, and genuine recommendations.

These kids with 4.0 GPAs and college-appealing e.c's are no longer the deciding factor in gaining admissions. If you aren't a super-duper academic, focus on what you are good at. I see all these kids crashing and buring because they're trying to be something they aren't.

I mean, do you think colleges really buy the whole Mexico/Romania/Japan missions trips? Probably spent more on the trip than the charity work..

College admissions is a GAME.

I got over 2000 on my SAT, got a 32 overall on my ACT, and my GPA was over 4.2 even having only one weighted class out of my last eight. Extracurriculars, check. Community involvement, check. Everything was there, it just didn't work out for me.

those scores are pretty mediocre, i had a 33 and a 1480 (of 1600) and never even considered that i was a candidate for an ivy league school. Of the 3 schools that i applied to, i was accepted by all 3 and went to my last choice because if was cheaper and more convenient.

I'm sorry you got rejected, but its not the end of the world. There are other schools out there that offer wonderful educations.

Granted I havn't gone through the process yet, and wont until next year, I still know the feeling of utter dissapointment.

I just boot up a game or something and play until I feel better. Nothing like killing things in a game to get rid of rage

And I hope you have some good alternatives. Not getting into your top school isnt the end of the world. And so, suck it up like a man, and wait for other letters. Truthfully, you'll probably be disappointed alot in the next month or si.

I usually partake in some semi-masochistic running for endless miles or lifting so heavy i get a hernia. I like to think of the Chimaira lyrics: "I'm going to pound you into oblivion, I'm going to make you fucking bleed."

What are you going to do? That's life, it'll end up the way you want it to. Just maybe taking a different path.

You just need to get over it and get on with your life. This should be a stepping stone for you to realize that life is not easy and that things do not always go your way. Be proactive and stop crying.

pfff.....that's nothing. Try 7 months (since graduation) and over 100 jobs and still counting. The only thing you can do is just keep your head high. Once you get into a mode of depression (this happened to me 2 months in), it will just get harder. Oh...one thing I learned during this whole situation....NEVER turn down a temp job.

dont worry about it, i was in your exact situation 6 years ago...got rejected from Cornell, so I ended up going to Rochester Institute of Technology (decent, but its no Cornell). I ended up doing well my first 2 years, and transferred to Cornell. Graduated from Cornell in 2006. If Cornell really is your #1 school, keep up your grades at wherever you end up attending, and try transferring as a sophmore, and if that doesnt work, try again as a junior

My highschool class is funny. The top colleges people got into included MIT, Cal Tech, John Hopkins, Stanford etc. but every single person who got into those places ended up going to UW(washington).

We were thinking of something to toast to at the graduation party and somebody yelled out "Lets toast to Will for telling MIT to go f- themselves!" It was quite funny especially since everyone around was part of the typical AP/IB nerdy school crowd.

Apply to a state school, attend for 4 years, pay off your $20k student loans (instead of $80k) and realize that top ranked school wasn't worth it.

heres my 2 cents FWIW, I was waitlisted to cornell because of a clerical error that was not in my favor. I thank God every day that happened because I would have gone had I been fully accepted. I was in ROTC at a Cornell detachment and holy hell cornell is a giant cesspool of hell. I hated ithaca, I hated the students at the campus, It's like the communist/socialist capital of the US. The campus is ridiculously huge and jam packed everywhere. I dreaded the drive up there every time for training with the only good part to my trip was knowing I could leave at the end of the day. Moral of my story: VISIT YOUR COLLEGE CHOICES!!!!

Dont feel bad, cornell isnt the holy grail of colleges, just go where your happy, hopefully cheaply, and enjoy a great 4 years of life...

I didn't really care when I got rejected from Columbia because I got into UCLA.

I had a friend who got accepted to Carnegie Mellon and Cornell but got rejected from UC Irvine. He still has that rejection letter framed.

My other friend got accepted to Cornell but got rejected to UC San Diego.

not sure why people say that...it does make a difference, depending on what you want to do. Certain companies/industries, it almost impossible to get into if you are not from a target school. One specifically, is the finance industry. If you do not attend one of the target schools, the chances of getting a job there are so much lower than if you had. Is it fair? Probably not, but with limited number jobs, and number of people wanting these jobs, schools are by far one of the easiest ways to cut down the applicant pool.
