How to delete Win98 in a dual boot (win98/xp) environment?

I installed win98 in my C drive and then installed win xp in the D drive so that I dual boot.

Now that I don't need win98 anymore and also I need some more harddisk space. I want to delete the win98 (with all contents in C drive, except boot files).

So I want to ask what files in C drive MUST NOT be deleted in order to be able to boot into D drive( Win XP)?

Someone more knowledgeable/experienced can confirm this, but as far as I've been able to determine, dual-boot systems do not share any boot files between partitions. In other words, you could make c: disappear entirely (aka erase everything) and XP should boot fine.

But this is only a tentative reply. :beer: to anyone who can help more.

You cannot remove everything in the C: partition, as boot files must always reside on the active primary partition.

The files that you MUST keep on C: are

boot.ini
ntldr
ntdetect.com
pagefile.sys (if present)
hiberfil.sys (if present)

You can then resize the C: partition and increase the D: partition with Partition Magic or something similar.

You should also edit the boot.ini and remove the reference to Win98.

Just get on Windows XP, Start> Settings> Control Panel> System> Advanced> Startup and Recovery> Uncheck the time to display list of operating systems.

You could also edit the startup file, just delete the line with the Windows 98 in it, but if you dont know where ur doing u better not touch it.
