The PCs in the school library have fortress installed, which pretty much limit them to web surfing and word processing. How can I get around this? I would like to install a couple programs.

thanx

Here is what I do when I need more "access"

Boot into safe mode and run msconfig from the start menu ( or edit the registry )...

Since they probably won't let you access the startup menu by pressing control, you have to reset in the middle of the bootup process. Windows will detect a problem and load safe mode

If you are using NT then you are out of luck for the most part

hey wizkid - please edit out that post. You don't understand what's it's like to be a sysadmin in a high school. I was one for about 4 months, and tips like yours are what got kids suspended.

Fortres will allow the students to do everything they're supposed to do, and nothing that they aren't. So if someone's asking how to get around it, they're getting into trouble. What "programs" do you think these kids want to install? Let me tell you, it ain't Office 2000.

heh yeah you're right tmj. it's weird how kids just want access to everything so they can screw it all up.. I for some reason don't care about screwing stuff up, I just want to be able to surf the net and read stuff like Anandtech. my school doesn't let us do that even

I could tell you...But I won't. I am the student admin at my school. Everyone trys to get me to tell them the password. I have not told anyone. However, I will say that a number of people have found a way around it. I am pretty sure it has to do with the MS office tool bar. That is all I will tell you. I am sick of cleaning up the messes people make when there is no security. Fortress is a pretty bad security program if you have to pay for it.

Good Guy: Why would NT need it? It has its own security. At my school, only the Win95 (they own 98 but will not use it) systems have Fortress.
