The people who had our place before us left an old sh!tty 20 lb propane tank here.
It is empty, how would I best dispose of it?
Don't really want to toss it in the dumpster.

It's too old to take to a trade in type place.

Thanks

Open the valve and toss it in the dumpster.

They don't like it but what choice do you have except to bury it.

You should be able to exchange it no matter how old or ugly it looks if you go to a place like wal-mart.

Be sure to set a fire near it, those things don't just blow up on their own.

the sparks from several bullets biting through should suffice

I've done it before with 1-pound tanks, you definitely need a fire. I've even had the fire go out because the propane came out so fast it apparantly displaced all of the oxygen in the area... at least that's my theory, it sounds better than "the propane blew the fire out." That time we were using a 12-gauge slug. Usually we just used a .22 on the little tanks, but you'd need something a little beefier to penetrate a 20 pound tank.

Yeah... it's not as spectacular as you'd be led to believe. But, if you set a 1 pound tank into a good fire.... WOW, what a bang it makes. Then again, just about any empty spray can makes just as loud of a bang.

The valve on the new tanks is different and no one in this area will take the old ones.

Not even if you just say, "Here, take this?"

Your local landfill should take it. I know mine does - in the metal recycling area. The only thing they'd check is to see that it's empty - and you've confirmed that.

throw it in the river

EDIT: seriously, I've wondered this too. I found 4 of these old tanks at the last place I rented. I wondered if you just took it to an exchange place when some schmuck was working, if you could get away with the exchange. Food for thought

they should take it back regardless of the fitting. most of those comapies refurb the tanks and put new fittings on them. i know that PPX does. if nothing else find a place that has an exchange cage thats unattended and leave it there the exchange company will pick it up even if the gas jocky says otherwise.

That's considered illegal dumping.

You can put them out with the curbside recycling here, or take them to the transfer station. You may want to check with your solid waste utility.

well we have a PPX exchange cage at my work and people drop them there all the time. we hold them for people who don't have an exchange tank, not a big issue. maybe call an exchange company directly and see what they say or check with the local dump. either one should have an idea.
