The terminal in Linux is one of the best things about it. It's infinitely more useful than cmd in Windows. But you rarely actually _need_ it these days, Ubuntu has gone to great lengths to curb it's use. I haven't had any issues with network shares, but I usually mount them manually by running /sbin/mount.cifs from the command line.
Personally, I wouldn't do the WUBI thing. It's got to be slower since you're running the system from a loopback file within a non-native filesystem. Running it in a VM for testing would likely work out much better.
