wouldn't a financial adviser be more prudent to seek advice from than an attorney after winning the lotto?

None of that made any sense at all after re-reading it 3 times.

There is a list that rates lawyers. I forgot what it's called, but I believe you could use that.

nope.. priority is protecting myself legally from every opportunist that wants my $.

as for my $, for the short term i'll stick the $ into the following till i get my legal defenses up:

1/3 S+p 500
1/3 US bonds
1/3 FTSE? (foreign- europe, japan, emerging markets)

I'm not 100% sure on how I'd invest the $140 million that I'd ultimately end up with, but even if I put it in my 4.5% USAA account then my interest would be over 6 million a year, which I would not be able to spend. Most likely I'd be setting up some serious foundations for the good of man. I live happily with a $40k a year salary, 6 million would not make me happier. I don't think that I could spend a million a year.

I'd buy gold, silver, and breweries.

I sure as hell wouldn't put it in a bank, commodities, bonds, funds, or tbills.

edit: or call your local bar association...

Friends of mine have used this tip on finding a good attorney:

1) On the web, check out the District court docket for the area you are in, or even better, the state appeals docket.

2) Start searching for issues such as what you need assistance with. Perhaps Family Custody, Assault, Rape, Battery, or whatever. Start reading cases and start noting the names of the attorneys who are involved in these types of cases, but also note if they won their case.

3) Now you should have a list of a few attorneys who work in the area of law you need and you already know are successful at what they do. To take this one further step, call some of the litigants, it could even be from a lost case of this attorney, and ask them how he did. What problems arrose, etc.

If you follow these steps, you should have a GOOD attorney for the specific legal area you want. No, I am not an attorney, but spent some time at law school and I do all my own legal work. The above does not constitute legal advice.

Most Bar Association's have a referral service. The attorneys they refer you to are experienced and, in many cases, have specialty certifications. It is the next best thing to getting a referral from friends (who, in any event, usually have no clue if their lawyer really is any good).

If I won the lottery, I would call my CPA (and I AM a lawyer).

Sorry, you are right. You would be much better off asking Uncle Bob who put his penis in a minor or Cousin Jim who can't seem to drive without a few drinks.

With that kind of money you can just go to law school.

What I think you really want is an insurance agent.

Check the commercial ads between airing of Judge Judy or Jerry Springer.

They seem to be pretty darn good!
