How to find out current upload/download speeds?

Hi,

Are there any Windows utilities that shows me what my current upload/download speeds are? Would be even better if they're broken down to IP address/host names? Sometimes when I'm uploading stuff to youtube/etc the bar doesn't move and I'm not sure if it's just slow, GUI not updating or has it stalled.

Why not use Windows Task Manager's Networking tab. Go to the "View" menu, select "Columns" and then select the Bytes sent per interval or Bytes received per interval.

Thanks. I didn't know you could display the sent/received bytes like that. However this still doesn't show me individual IP addresses so I wouldn't know if the bytes sent are to youtube or say bittorrent.

I you router support Tomato Firmware you can do bandwidth monitoring of you lan but its limited of doing individual client monitoring. It a nice tool for your network though you might want to add it as its free. You can see info here on its monitoring functions.....................

I have had good results from following these steps:

1. Run a speed test at any of the NDT servers - http://nitro.ucsc.edu/ - has given me the most consistent results.

2. Once the test finishes click on the Statistics tab << This will tell you if the NIC is problem or there is bad cable.

3. Next click on the More Details tab - scroll down to the bottom to see if the receive buffer size is a problem.

4. If that is indeed the problem, go to http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks, and run a Tweak test. If the Results tab suggests making changes - download a tool called Dr TCP<< http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp - that helps you make registry changes to improve your download speeds.

5. Reboot and you may see an improvement. Dont, however, bet on it.
