How to find out video format?

I saved a video off my digital camera, and I can't figure out which format to use and/or player.

What kind of digital camera is it? It's more than likely mpeg4 (I think).

what's the file extension?

.mpg?
.avi?
.mov?

Sorry, it's my friends DC and he just saved it on my pc and then headed out.

It has no extension right now.

:Q how could that be? Doesn't all files have to have an extension? Try to play it and see if you can "use the intarweb to search for programs...." thingy.

wait, maybe you have your comp set to hide known file extensions...

Try right clicking on it, and see what properties have to say about it. If you dont know, take a screen shot of the properties, and then post it here.

Type of file: "file"

It has no extenstion...

I have tried WMP9 and renamed it mpg, mpeg, and wmv...

And quicktime, .mov and avi

Does it give you any error messages when trying to play it? Do you have MS WMP, update to 9.0 and sees what happens.

Gspot did not work. "Unknow file. Not an AVI"
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player does not support the format you are trying to play

My friend has gone to work. There must be some program on the net that can tell what type of file it is

try renaming it *.avi, *.mpeg, *.mpg, *.mov

one by one and re-scanning it with Gspot.

tedious, but there isn't much else you can do.

it shouldnt matter what its named, it should still play.
