Ending gerrymandering would cause panic within the Republican party in all of those states that come to rely on it as a means to artificially seize and retain control of their states. They are comfortable with the idea that minority party rule is an acceptable thing so long as they're the ones who benefit from it.

To have the Democrat Party running the nation is to give back to the unions the power they lost from the class warfare Big Business have been waging against the middle class and the poor since way back when. This is totally unacceptable to those folks who own and operate the Republican party of whom are the nation's aristocrat class. They will never give up the wins they've accrued that gives them the ability to corrupt our politiicans at will. They like the staus quo that gives them the protections they need to keep on corrupting their Republican stooges in Congress rendering any effort to end gerrymandering a near impossible task.

Agreed, although methinks it would negatively affect the Republicans a whole lot more than the Democrats.

edit - The Republican party is facing the fact that trending demographics is not tilting in their favor. Their natural response is to cheat the hell out of the system in order to *ahem* "level the playing field in their favor". So they're going to want even more creative means to mitigate the trend of which includes even more restrictive gerrymandering methods at their disposal.

Better yet, get rid of districts entirely as a means of electing people and do it by proportional vote in the state.

Better yet, unicameral legislatures for at minimum the state level, and probably at the federal level too. Uncap the number of representatives allowed in the House and set proportions that assign representation based on the smallest state.

The bifurcation of the legislature, especially stupid at the state level, makes it extremely challenging to solve problems. And then people can also see what they actually vote for, since there would be less ability to "blame the system".
