How to get AHCI working....

Installed windows 7 and the sata settings in the bios were not set to AHCI probably because the SSD was not initially recognized. So I had set it to IDE and installed. Now I wish to get AHCI working, i ran a patch from MS that is supposed to load the drivers and now, in the BIOS, when I set to AHCI, the SSD is still not recognized. How to get this to work I am not sure.

I think you are going to have to reinstall in AHCI mode....

Sometimes you need a utility like Acronis to setup the drive first (outside of Windows) before a Windows install will see it.

Seen this some time ago but can't exactly remember where or I would include the author:

Press Ctrl + X and select Command Prompt (A)dmin from the menu and then enter the following command:
bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal


Reboot and then enter the BIOS (typically press F1, F2, F10 or Delete)
Change the SATA drive setting to AHCI and exit the BIOS save settings.

Windows will boot into Safe Mode.



Open an Administrator Command Prompt again and enter the following command to disable Safe Mode boot:
bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot


Reboot

I have used this a few times on both SSD's and mechanical hard drives......Has worked every time.

Tanks Stinger for this info. But the problem is in the initial post of the computer when I have set the BIOS to AHCI and the SSD is not detected. The computer hangs up very time at this point requiring me to shut down, disconnect the offending SSD, reenter the BIOS and go back to the IDE setting if I want it to boot at all. So what could be causing the computer to hang up at detecting this SSD when set to AHCI in the BIOS? I am stumped on this one.

Well with some trial and error I, more or less, solved the POST hangup at detecting the SSD on my computer. I created an image using the image backup found in windows 7 on the second driive, performed a secure erase of the SSD, an OCZ vertex 3, and put that image back on the SSD. It worked and booted up all the while in the BIOS it is set to AHCI. Here is the less, after the POST I get a blinking cursor in the upper left hand side of the screen for a good 20-25 seconds, after which it goes into windows normally. What will cause it to wait with a blinking cursor for 20-25 seconds?
