How to get audio through HDMI

I have just built a new PC. I am very new at this.
I watch HD movies through my computer on my sony tv. I am currently using DVI and 3.5mm.
I wanted to know if there is a way I can get audio and video to come out of the HDMI port on my HD 6950 graphics card.

Is there a way to connect it to my P8P67 motherboard?
If so which cable do I need?

Could you just tell me if I need a physical wire then I will figure out the next steps.

Use the hdmi from the card to the set,install the hd audio driver from amd and then select ati hd audio in sounds and audio devices in the control panel.

I don't own an AMD card, but if the setup is the same as the GTX 460 you don't need any extra cables. Just follow the steps above and you should be all set. It's not like the old days where you needed an SPDIF cable to run from the motherboard to the card, it is all done through the PCI-E connection.

If your HD 6950 has an HDMI port, then it couldn't be simpler. You simply connect an HDMI cable from the computer to your TV, and it will carry audio and video to the TV.

The ATI drivers should install the HDMI audio drivers when they're installed but if you don't have the HDMI drivers on your PC, then uninstall your current ATI drivers and download the new Catalyst Control Centre/Drivers from ati.com . Do a full install - it includes the HDMI audio driver.

You *may* have to switch the output mode from your normal speaker output to the HDMI audio path. Do to this go to Control Panel > Sound and then change your playback device from the default to "ATI HDMI audio" . Couldn't be simpler .

If you have a DVI port on your ATI card and have an included DVI to HDMI adapter, then you follow the same steps. DVI *cables* don't carry audio but your DVI port on your ATI cards has extra pins to carry audio by using an ATI brand DVI to HDMI adapter.

As I said I am new to this, and was under the impression that I somehow had to connect it through spdif.

I do have one more question though, say if I got a PCI sound card, is there any way I could connect it to my 6950?

You can't. The audio output by your video card's HDMI connection is created by a realtek sound card chip built onto the video card. There is currently no way to route a separate sound card's output through it.
