As mentioned above, your local travel agent might have some good resources for what you're looking for, as compared to spending hours searching the web. That's what they get paid for...to find the package you want, from YOUR local area...

exactly! can you think of anyway to search it besides opening up the yellow pages ?

I use a variety of travel sites when I'm looking to travel for vacation, including Pleasant and Expedia, (probably 90%) and a couple others as well. However, your local travel agent has resources we don't generally have access to.
You can check the major airlines, as MOST of them are now in the "Package Vacation' business in one way or another.

You could pretty easily swing a 7 day cruise for under 1500 with air and everything.

Just as a reference, Royal Caribbean has a "Carribean Special" cruise leaving April 28th that is $399/piece for an inside cabin. Add in taxes and such, and you're talking just under $900. Just a quick search of air and it looks like the tickets will run you ~250/piece, so that will bring you just under the $1500 mark. Of course, you will want some extra money for shopping/excursions/tips, but this is just a quick example. If you really did some searching, you could definately make it in your budget.

I'd go someplace cheap and use the extra money to shower her with luxuries she's not accustomed to. Sure would be better than spending your wad on getting to your destination, then sitting there staring at each other thinking "now what?"

Check out worryfreevacations.com. Don't know what your destination city is, but they have trips from Minneapolis to Mazatlan for around $500 apiece--air travel included.

The closer it gets to the departure date, the lower the prices get. Also, they offer $79 airfare deals that change by destination weekly. Maybe bookmark this page?

I did the bahamas within this budget, but granted I drove down to Miami and took a boat over. The beaches there are good break from this weather and I'm sure you can find some good cheap deals even if you need to fly there, and especially if you're on the east coast. Check out this site Bahamas - its awesome and has a lot of really good info as well as being cool for killing time at the office like I do.
