Yeah its really getting just sad now, i literally treat cops like 5 year olds now when i deal with them, just to ensure i dont get shot.
If i get pulled over it goes something like this:
ALWAYS STAY IN THE CAR
Officer walks to window and asks for licence and registration/proof of insurance
I reply im going to get my wallet from my back right pants pocket using my right hand, and do so very slowly
Then i respond that im going to reach for my insurance paperwork in my glove box with my right hand very slowly, i usually pause after i open the glove box and verbalize that im reaching into it for the insurance paperwork before i do it.
If he asks me to do/get anything else i always let him know in advance where it is, and which limb ill be using to get it. Always leaving other hand in plain sight gripping the steering wheel at all times.
If he asks me to exit the vehicle ill do so by reaching through the window with both arms/hands, operating the door from the outside with both hands in plain sight, open the door and step out with both arms still through the doors window. Ill then inform him im going to step back and place both my arms on the roof above the back door, and wait for further instructions.
This usually goes very well, the last cop that pulled me over actually made a comment that i was very professional about it and asked if i had any law enforcement background.
The only time i had any issues was one time when i was going shooting up on a old logging road, got stopped at a road block on the way there, and had 4 rifles in a duffel bag in the middle of the back seat beside a crate of ammunition, both clearly in plain sight.
The officer told me to open the bag and remove the rifles for him to inspect, i refused. I told him i was more than happy to wait for him to call another officer to the scene so he could open it himself and have someone to cover him but there was no way i was reaching into a duffel bag and pulling out a rifle with a cop behind me, especially since he had zero cause to search my vehicle in the first place and i considered it to be an illegal search. He choose to let me go on my way and never opened the bag of rifles after confirming that my Firearms license was indeed authentic. I believe the only reason he wanted to see the rifles was because he assumed i was also taking my Pistols out to shoot(common occurrence, even though illegal in canada, the only place we can legally shoot pistols is at the government approved ranges). And i have 2 Pistols registered in my name which im sure came up on his screen when he ran my firearms licence through his system. Its sad but in canada legal firearms owners generally get treated like criminals by the police. This is why i now have a set routine that is carried out like listed above every time i get pulled over now, dont need some trigger happy cop looking at his screen seeing i have firearms in my name and getting carried away. Im not going to be a statistic.
