How to get website to come up in search?

I have gone to google, lycos, etc and registered a website. This was about 3 months ago, 2 months ago and a month ago. I do a specific search for the name of the website and it doesnt come up anywhere. Wtf is up with that? I did all the meta tag and information stuff. Anyone know the correct way of doing this? Is it worth the $20 to have theses places submit it to over 5000 (or whatever) search engines? I might as well not have a site, if no one can find it!

Try registering it @ Open Directory
If your site has been accepted into the Open Directory, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on partner sites which use the Open Directory data, such as AOL Search, DirectHit, HotBot, Google, Lycos, Netscape Search and more!

i have tried open directory and have never found a catagory that fits my site or my forum. It is to broad i guess. It is a sports forum that covers ALL sports that are performed in the state of Nebraska, seasonal, all except football. I have submitted several times but have never satisified their requirements.
