How to get your lazy boss to do his job?

I worked some OT back in Jan that I never got paid for. Some paper work needed to be generated which needs to be signed off by my boss. Literally every single week since then I have gone into his office asking if he has signed it yet. Same answer every time, "Oh I haven't got to it yet, but I will be really soon."

I see it just sitting there on top of his computer, same as all the other weeks, untouched. It's like 11 hours of over time, which will probably turn out to be like $350-$400 after taxes, and I really need it.

It's starting to piss me off now because this is my money, not some BS thing. In a world where I couldn't ever get fired, I would tell him to do his fucking job as a supervisor and stop dicking around. However, I need to be more...Polite.

How would I get the results I want? Trolls, give me your funniest and most troll-like answer because I know you will post some stupid shit in here anyway.

Increase frequency of reminders.

Or ask him if there is someone else who can sign who has less on their plate. You could try going above his head but that is likely to cause problems.

I would be honest with him, and use a carrot approach.

Something along these lines... "I know you're really busy and have a lot to do. But it's been X weeks that I've been waiting for this OT and not having the funds is causing difficulties for my family. Is there anything I can do to make it easier for you to get this done?"

If there's something specific you know he wants done and that you can do, offer to do it.

This. Let him know that this is causing you hardship.

The next time you talk to him, don't leave until you get a commitment i.e. date/time when he will have it completed.

That way you give him options and he can put your request on his list of prioritized tasks.

This seems a bit fishy to me. How big a process is it for him to approve it? The guy can't be bothered to pick up a sheaf of papers and scribble on the bottom? It would be worth it to me just to get you to quit nagging me about it for weeks on end.

Is there some reason he might not want to approve overtime, like budget issues in his department that would reflect badly on him? Or maybe his bosses specifically told him not to allow overtime during that period and he's covering his ass by not pushing the paperwork through. This level of neglect for what seems like a simple matter raises some questions for me.

Follow him to the bathroom. Offer to join him for lunch. Start every conversation you have with him with "Hey remember that OT I did that comes out to $500 that I really need for my family?"

In my company supervisors don't do budget stuff, that is the manager (supervisor's boss). That's what I said. All that he has to do as far as I know, is sign it. He is notorious for being lazy and procrastinating on even the most basic of his duties.

I would prefer to not tell my manager about this and ruffle feathers. It's one thing for him to not sign off on a calc or other technical documents on time, but this is my money. One thing a supervisor should not fvck up is his employees pay. And if he does, he should fix it promptly.

And yes we do have a very large HR department. I also don't want to report him to HR either and piss him off.

Yeah if you have a payroll dept, call them up asking if your boss has submitted the overtime report. If not, then talk to your boss and let him know you checked with the payroll dept about the OT report and that they're expecting it from him.

Next time you remind him about let him know that if he wants to sign it right now you could run it down to payroll for him. Ask him if he has any questions about it. Reiterate that you'd be happy to run it down to payroll right now.

Well, you're a lot smarter than most of the people giving you 'advice' in this thread.

It sucks when people don't do their jobs and you can't tell them to get with the program, but the only way you are going to get this done is by "playing nice".

Treat him like a child, hold his hand with a pen in it and rub it on the doc you need signed.

Tis the way of the world Charles. I was just hoping to see if there were any nice, but creative ways to get him to do it any faster. As far as I know he literally needs to sign it, and then I can take care of the rest (like faxing to payroll, etc).

He is notorious for sucking at life.

You've been missing $400 for two or three months? I would have already gone over his head, unless his boss is a moron as well. Granted, I suck at politics and refuse to tolerate the willfully incompetent.

This is a violation of Labor Law - even if its not approved they still have to pay you. The approval process is a formality. They have to pay you for the time worked.

1) Contact Payroll
2) Contact HR
3) Walk in office, grab paperwork, ask him to sign it - now
4) Contact Dept of Labor
