How to help a kitten with a hairball?

Any idea how to help a baby kitten to get rid of his first hairball? Several times he's gotta really close to getting rid of it but it looks like he just won't let it go and keeps swallowing it again. He's been having problems with it for almost a day now and I'm starting to feel bad for the little guy. Anybody know what I can do to help him?

Some cats have to have surgery due to hairballs that they don't get out of their system. This is a 2-month old kitten who has nfc what to do about his hairball and he's already having a hard time breathing because of the almost constant coughing he's been doing for the past 24 hours and I'm just trying to figure out what I can do to help.

Does this have a pretty immediate effect, something to help work it out over time, or is this a preventative treatment?

Either get some hairball medication or feed it a bunch of vasaline (as all hairball medication is, is vasaline with a malt falvoring in it).

put some vegetable oil in a dish next to their food and water...they drink some and itll come right up...Ive always done that for my cats

There are cat treats that can be given to prevent and eliminate hairballs. My kitty, Anor, really seems to like them. I give her Pounce Hairball: Moist Chicken Flavor treats.
