How to identify lapped CPU's?

Howdy all,

I've come across a few CPU's that have been lapped, thus rendering their 'name/model/whatever' labelling/labeling moot. How can I tell what they are? The undersides look different, but my google-fu has failed me I reckon pics may help, eh?

Danke Shern in advance

Fire them up in a rig and use any number of utilities that are out there. Like CPU-Z.

Unfortunately, that's about the only option I can imagine.

I could wonder how I might sell my i7-2600K "used," with a picture of a totally-copper heatspreader surface.

I noticed on EBay someone selling an i7-2700K which had all the nickel lapped off. His sales pitch: "Great overclocker! Can run stable at 5.0 Ghz!"

I can't remember his asking price. I just wonder who would take a chance on that item -- given the way in which the seller presents it!

Really wide angle shot/photoshop - make it look like it's a 12 inch wide vista of ubermodded super-cooling copper. ;-)

Especially if the fine print says: Ran it for days, but not so stable at 5.9 Ghz at 1.8V. ;-)

Underside might not be reliable. It's possible for example that 2500k could be sold as a 2600k. Worse, it may even be a lower end locked version. I guess the answer is that underside is only reliable for telling the generation of CPU.

The only real way is to risk it I fear if you are a buyer.

I'd only buy if it were cheap then.

It was a concern after the mining collapse with used 290x and 290 cards - but they were cheap so I guess there was that. The issue is that GPGPU operations are very heat intensive and the VRMs probably were at 90C+ temps for months on end.

OK,

I tossed one into a board I picked up the other day. Evidently it's a Sandy Bridge E or EP variety:

There's another flavor of CPU as well. The little 'notches' or whatever they're called are placed a little bit different. I'll have to look around to see if I have a mobo that will take it.

Some kind of sample xenon looks like ? How did you get hold of it

ES = engineering sample

Probably quite a good chip 6/6 @2.9. Does it overclock ?

That explains a lot. I can see where ES would = Engineering Sample.

Illegal? How so? I'm not planning to sell it *shrugs*. If that's the case, I'll get up with the folks in that area to see about getting it back to them. Don't want anyone getting into trouble ()

There has been a lot of folks leaving the company lately, and there are dozens of large cardboard scrap boxes all over the place. Looks like someone got a little too 'trash happy' lol. I did find some other cool stuff like an old-timey geiger counter, power supplies, hard drives, memory, and cables galore.

Thx all for the valuable info

It's not illegal ffs. It's just a sample CPU that intel send out to OEM's so they can make up a system. Looks like your work got send one and then someone threw it out when it was not needed

Looks like a nice chip though , I'd try and overclock it. If you could get it up to 3.3ghz or so it would probably be better than say an i5 2500k for gaming

As far as the ES chips are concerned you can use them for testing.

As I do with one. ()

All ES samples are the property of Intel. You simply cant legally own an ES sample.

http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-030747.htm

Oh for christ sake, its perfectly legal to have an engineering sample of any intel processors, as intel gives them out for testing. It's illegal to resell them, that is all. If intel requests the processors be returned you are also legally obligated to return the chip, which I'm sure is not the case with a sandy bridge processor. lol

Extra Spicy are still technically owned buy INTEL though I believe, if they knew about it and wanted to get it back I guess.

I doubt they'll come gunning for ya.

LOL 'Extra Spicy'. I'll have to remember that.

What kinda has me confused is the info under the 'name' section of CPU-Z. It says 'Intel Core i3/I5/I7'. Which one is it? Perhaps I'm just missing something. Maybe all the other info points to what it actually is lol.

Would it be even worthwhile to build a system using this CPU? I have all the parts necessary already except a mobo (well, ok all the RAM I have is ECC - mostly 10600 and 12800 flavors). Does such a compatible board even exist that has a PCIe 16x slot available?

It's a C1 stepping Sandy Bridge E. In theory, any X79 board with a BIOS from the last 2 years should work.

Anyhow, SNB-E is neither a performance or power king at this point. But it's not a bad chip. Especially if you got it for free and can get a cheaper board to go with it.

As for the name, since it's an ES Intel likely didn't have a name ready for it at the time. I'd guess it was one of the first C1 stepping processors, which was the shipping stepping for SNB-E, making it one of the first SNB-E processors to go out.

Thank you for the clarification Looks like I'll be hard pressed to find a 'new' X79 board on the cheap. I had no idea they were/are still usually around 200-250! Only thing I really found was a 'refurb', and I'm not too sure about it:
