Go to MySQL website (
click here). Download the RPM package version of the software and I would also recommend downloading the client package as well. Once you have done that, in the directory where you have downloaded the RPM's type:
rpm -i <filename goes in here> <other filename goes in here, like the client package>
Let's say the filenames are mysql-4.0.0.i386.rpm and mysql-client-4.0.0.i386.rpm, then your command would be:
rpm -i mysql-4.0.0.i386.rpm mysql-client-4.0.0.i386.rpm
Once the installation is complete, MySQL should be automatically started. You can check if it has been started by typing in:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld status
If it has been started, it should say "MySQL is running". If not, then type in:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld start
