HOW TO INSTALL SOFTWARE IN LINUX

WELL EVERYBODY HAS TOLD ME THAT WINDWOS SUCKS THIS THAT ....WELL I USED WINDOWS FROM THE TIME WHEN I GOT MY FIRST COMPUTER SO I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT LINUX


SEACRH A LOT WEBSITE I FOUND THIS WEBSITE WHICH I THINK CAN HELP ME A LOT..............


WELL I HAVE INSTALLED SUSE 9.1 ................WELL I WANT TO INSTALL MORE SOFTWARE .................IN SUSE 9.1 ..............SO I THINK U GUYS CAN HELP ME WITH IT .................


IT WOULD BE BETTER IF U POST WITH SCREEN SHOTS BECAUSE AS I TOLD U I NEVER USED LINUX BEFORE


WELL I ALSO NEED TO KNOW HOW TO INSTALL NVIDIA DRIVER FOR LINUX I HAVETHEM IN MY HARDDISK.............................PLZ HELP ME..........

See my sig for _very_ basic unix command documentation. I'm still working on a couple of other ideas, but life is in the way ATM.

The nVidia documentation for installing their drivers is pretty good. Give it a read and ask specific questions about it if necessary.

I think you can install software on SuSE through YaST, but I haven't gotten around to playing with it just yet. I keep meaning to... I need more hardware. I've got an nVidia card all ready to go, just don't have the rest of the box yet. Although I guess I could canabilize one of the OpenBSD boxes...

actually, i wanted to ask the same q ... but w/out the caplock virus.

basically, i've got a new machine; not yet decided which flavour of Linux; quickly tried Mandrake 10.1, Fedora core 3, Suse 9.1, Xandros 2.0 plus Lives of Lindows and Knoppix; i want to use it initially for wp/spreadsheet/database work, bit torrent plus processing/transmitting SETI@home (with a cache). later i'd like to move everything from my windows systems to Linux.
to run seti i need a cache and since lin-seti is claimed to be seti driver (which i currently use on windows) compatible, i've tried to "install" it, supplied instructions below:
Just like nearly every other linux program ;-)
- Unpack tarball and cd to dir
- su to root
- ./configure
- make
- make install
Your settings file will sit in /etc/lin-seti/lin-setirc

the unpack was easy using right-click and extract here.

BUT
in suse clicking install software gave me a very pretty screen with multiple windows that i could not make head nor tail of.
with fedora i'd given up long before i got anywhere near installing software.
xandros even sooner.
mandrake ... i couldn't work out how to install software.

plez help, exactly where do i "su to root", etc? presumably these commands are done in some sort of dos prompt but where do i get the prompt from?

I would suggest you use Suse or Mandrake for your first install. I belive that the install for those are easier than windows. And if you have the harddrive space do a full install, this will give access to pretty much anything that windows has but for free. This way you can try out linux for a week and realize that its not as easy as Windows.

When people say windows sucks thats their own opinion. You need to know your own opinion about windows, not what some cool linux guy on a forum tells you. Yeah windows has security risks out the a_s but thats what your going to deal with when your running an os that 95% of the world uses also. If you really hate windows that bad maybe you should learn to update it and prevent security flaws.

I belive that you switching to linux is going to be a lot bigger step than updating your windows machine. If you want to use linux because your work requires you too your you just want to experiment then fine. But if you looking for a better desktop operating system than windows xp, good luck.

Now for the installing programs part, if you tried to install programs on suse and got lost with yast then you have other issuses.

Suse, Fedora, and Mandrake use rpms. Rpms are easy to use, a few shots at google will solve your rpm needs.
