Is that a promise?

What does that mean?

n0cmonkey is one of the most knowledgle posters around this forum, along with Nothinman, Sunner, Bingbongwooeyfooey, drag and a few others he is what makes this forum what it is.

Heh, i would like you to try to treat n0c that way though, a bit of superiority ownage is always fun to read.

For SUSE it is Yast! for Mandrake or Fedora you can use Yum, for Slackware you use Swaret, Slackpkg or Slapt-get, for Debian you use apt-get, for Arch you use pacman, for other distros you use their package managers.

For the various BSD's and some Linux versions you use cvsup or ports.

The question is, are you willing to learn how to optimize your system or will you just be another one of those, "i would have to read 20 lines of text, it is not worth it" kind of people?

Obviously, htmlmasterdave caught the remark above was a bit of humour (as is most of this thread). My apologies you did not.

basically, i've got a new machine; not yet decided which flavour of Linux; quickly tried Mandrake 10.1, Fedora core 3, Suse 9.1, Xandros 2.0 plus Lives of Lindows and Knoppix; i want to use it initially for wp/spreadsheet/database work, bit torrent plus processing/transmitting SETI@home (with a cache). later i'd like to move everything from my windows systems to Linux.
to run seti i need a cache and since lin-seti is claimed to be seti driver (which i currently use on windows) compatible, i've tried to "install" it, supplied instructions below:
Just like nearly every other linux program ;-)
- Unpack tarball and cd to dir
- su to root
- ./configure
- make
- make install
Your settings file will sit in /etc/lin-seti/lin-setirc

the unpack was easy using right-click and extract here.

BUT
in suse clicking install software gave me a very pretty screen with multiple windows that i could not make head nor tail of.
with fedora i'd given up long before i got anywhere near installing software.
xandros even sooner.
mandrake ... i couldn't work out how to install software.

plez help, exactly where do i "su to root", etc? presumably these commands are done in some sort of dos prompt but where do i get the prompt from?

thnkx,

I would be willing to help you..

If using basic SUSE install, click on the icon with a monitor and a shell, this will open a terminal window.. If you don't have that, go through your "start button" until you find terminal.

To "su to root" open a terminal, and type su. It will ask for a password, type the root password, you have now "su'd to root"

thanks hevnsnt, i really appreciate that and i'll certainly try it ltr today.

Klixxer: would you care to point me in the direction of which doc's would be best to read 1st?
i've already read quite a bit of stuff but it sortof tasted to me as if it was all a little out of date and so i was rather dubious about it. i am prepared to read but i'm not prepared to wiat until i've read everything ever written about linux before i give it a try - give me hands-on training every time! unfortunately, much that i've read seems to be either waffle or too deep and doesn't seem to understand that us virgins are like cavemen who have never even seen a car b4. the 1st thing we need is to be told "this is a steering wheel and it makes the car go left or right; this is the brake, press it when you want to stop", etc.

anyway, thanks again

Depends on your distro, every distro i have ever tried have had extensive documentation on their homepage.

If you are looking for specific command help type man "command" in a terminal window to get to the man pages for your packages, for instructions how to use the man system man man.

Learning *nix isn't easy, but it's well worth the time it takes and beats finishing Doom 3 for the fifth time.

If you have anything specific you wonder about this is a good forum, you could start by searching for posts made by the members i mentioned above, especially Drag who goes out of his way to help people.

If you need to do it without screwing anything up, try a virtual machine software package like vmware and install it in there, as you look for more info you will learn a lot.

I am in a bit of a tight spot and have little time to visit the forums these days (I am in Afghanistan) so it might take a while if you ask me anything, but i would be glad to help if i can.

My recommendation, start out with installing it in a VM, vmware or bosch both work just fine i am told, don't have much experience with bosch though, but drag recommends it and i trust him so...

Go with a basic distro like Slackware, arch, crux or debian, i prefer Slackware but many others prefer the other distros.

Welcome to *nix world, this ride never stops.

actually, i have tried so many distros. i didnt like mandrake 9.2 and up. I didnt like fedora fc 2, i didnt like suse. However, now i am running Ubuntu. After i have taken the time to read and to get on the irc channels and learn online from some very smart people, i would choose ubuntu over any distro. its a little hard to understand at first, but once you get the picture that almost all things go thru the terminal it isnt so bad. i actually like it better. at least now, on linux, my burner hasnt burned a dvd coaster in at least a week or so. thats how long i have had this thing. on nero, it burned 2 dvd coasters and i will never use it again.

Find one of drag's posts and look at his sig. There is a link to very basic *nix commands in my sig. I tried to make it *nix agnostic though, so specific distro help won't be there. If you have questions about the doc in my sig, feel free to PM (anyone can PM me about it).
