i've heard all the horror stories of ppl cracking their cpu cores and i don't want that to happen to my tbird.....~! so please tell me the correct way of installing the thing, do i need thermal paste? is it difficult to install the super orb? any comments appreciated...

first thing, dont' expect much overclocking leeway with the super-orb.

if you do really, really want to install it, make sure you use grease, something is better than nothing.

And, make sure you don't tilt the heatsink when mounting it, keep it flat on the core. Yes, users with super/chrome orbs do tend to crack their duron/t-birds at an alarming rate.

Mike,

I have 2 C-orbs on Duron systems. Other than it taking a lot of pressure to get the first one mounted, I am not aware of any fit problems (tho I didn't really check for any). On the second one (MSI K7T P2), I noticed that it was not only hard, but that it actually won't sit flat on the chip. The spacing of the clip holes to the mating surface of the heat sink is less than the thickness of the socket and chip combo, and requires that the spring clip "bow" a lot to hook the long side to the socket. This bowing is not symetrical, as the single hole in the spring is farther from center and weaker than the other end (which is shorter and wider), the base of the sink has to rest on one edge of the chip and never pulls down flush to it.

Don't know if this is common (haven't looked at the first one, as it seems to be working fine at 600 mhz). This one also seems fine at 850 mhz (no idea of the temp - bios says 101 degrees, but that probably isn't close). I'm depending on the thermal pad to fill up the gap at the moment.

easy, you look at it, then take it off and buy a better hsf

i didnt know the super orb was rated to 1.2ghz, or was that another TT hsf?

I just installed my spare TT Super Orb in my dad's new computer this friday, damn noisy thing, not very efficient.

The ½-prized Aopen HSF with 60 mm Everflow cooler was approx. 5 °C cooler. (Also one of my spares)

So I quickly switched them around again, and next week when his FOP32-1 arrives I'll get it instead of the Aopen one.

We agreed that he was more in need of a quiet computer because he's not going to OC it.

(For a good sakes cause I have to mention, that I already have a Silverado50, which I love!)

The FOP32-1 will just be a spare/toy...

TK,

As far as the chrome-orbs, they're effective to about 950. Past that, and their efficiency seriously drops off. THe Super-orb maxes aroudn 1.2, not hte 1.5ghz that thermaltake claims.

The warp in the base is common to all chrome-orbs, even those that thermaltake "claims" are copies.

The reason the clip is "bowed" and off center, is because the center of the cpu core is not centered. It is offset slighly, and the main pressure point of the clip is directly over the core(or should be). Excessive twisting of the heatsink is what usually leads to cracked cores.
