how to install windows 2000 on blank hard drive

i have a single hard drive system and i want to install windows 2000 pro , i tried using a windows 98 boot disk then typing e:setup , but it says it can not read my windows 2000 disk in dos , thanks for the help

Set your BIOS to boot from CD first. Boot off of CD and follow prompts.

The w2k install program using DOS is winnt.exe - if the DOS cdrom drivers are loading properly the w2k cd should be readable.

You can't run the win2k install from DOS, because there is no DOS in win2k.

Boot from your 98 boot disk, then change to your cd-rom drive. There will be a directory call Bootdisk. Run Makeboot.exe, this will create the four boot disks for 2000.

I'm having this EXACT same problem. I can't install win2k on a blank hd for some reason

one tip -- type e:\i386\winnt.exe

that will load the dos setup thing


edit: If anyone knows what "File /ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 7." means, please let me know

do not boot from a win98 disk, BOOT FROM THE 4 SETUPS DISKS YOU CREATE from the 2000 cd!!
then it should worked, it worked for me on a brand new blank HD
a message will come up saying something about a new blank drive

Yes, you need to boot from the 4 boot floppies in order to install 2000.

However to make those boot disks, you need to either, boot up with a 98 boot disk and run makeboot.exe or put the win2k cd into an existing system and then run makebt32.exe.
Then put the 1st disk in the drive and reboot.

Did you get it ?
I usually boot from a Win98 boot disk in the floppy.
a: sys c: enter
The cdrom is normally available from the boot disk as well.
I copy the i386 directory from the cd to the hd, same dir i386.
Pull the boot floppy and reboot to the HD.
At the c: prompt
cd i386
winnt /b (not sure about the /b,seems to come to mind)
w2k installs from the HD.
You can leave the i386 there if space is no problem or delete after W2k installs.

Do what Lostpups said, although you don't have to copy if you don't want to.
I usually boot with a Win98SE boot disk (making sure the cd-rom drivers are on there) then run SmartDRV.exe twice. The SmartDRV.exe is a disk caching utility (I think) which makes the install WAY faster. You have to run it twice to get it to work. First time nothing shows up, second time you'll get a message. If you can't find that file, just look through a Win98 machine and copy it over. It's around 50kb's I think.

Lastly, after that's done (not sure if you need a reboot) just boot up again and go into the cd, i386 folder and run winnt.exe.
