How to limit tenants usage?

I'm a big CS:S, DOD fan, and i was all good until this one tenant started using the internet. They're all paying me per month, and i have the Pro dsl. I have one router in my room, and one router up in the attic for maximum wirelessness. I need something that can limit their speeds, so i can continue to play cs:s, and they can still use the internet but not be downloading 5 gigs of porn at the same time. Is there such a tool? The router in my room is a netgear, the one thats hard to access in the attic is a buffalo, i think all the tenants are connected to that one.

What's your link speed?

You could always buy a used packeteer off ebay. The 2mb ones go for like $200 and the 6mb are around $600

Just an idea

Try the Tomato Firmware. It is supposed to be more stable and more complete in terms of QoS than DD-WRT.

Or you could just speak to the tosser thats hogging the bandwidth and give him specific times to download otherwise youll disconect him and he can go elsewhere for his internet.

Kick his ass Seabass!

You should just get an addt'l dsl line. It's your fault for offering internet in the first place. I'm sure you didnt specify "hey man, just dont use too much, i like to game" If you limit his net, i think it will come back to bite you in the butt.

I'm surprised you found DD-WRT unstable.
It's totally the opposite for me.

Maybe try a different version?
I've WRT54G though... so I don't know what's good for a netgear

Administering bandwidth usage should be pretty straight forward with proper firmware and knowledge.

Another way if you don't want to go through the configuration hassle, get a gaming router.
I think they will enable QoS by default to give highest priority to gaming packets.

I use the default linksys firmware for my router and the QoS works fine. It would annoy me when the wife was browsing myspace and lag my CSS games. Setup QoS and all should work well.

I redirected Bit torrents to my room mate and use QoS and it works fine with my Linksis. No WoW lag for me. I would agree with the above posts. Also, the attic might be too warm for your unit. I had one in a cabinet with a computer, and the ventilation was poor and heat was building up. Then the heat started to cause erratic behavior from both devices.

nah, I'm 100% positive its not the attic thats causing any lag. Right now it's winter in the big $@! victorian house, the people probably dont have any heaters, and if they do it'd be small portable ones. The attic is about the size of a small/medium apartment, I can easily stand and walk a LONG ways in this thing. Planning to remodel it, but getting stairs up there is a major prob. So I found a deal on a Linksys wrt54G, is that a good, stable one? Found a used one for $30, what I'm willing to pay for QoS. any help is appreciated, thanks!

edit: wow, this is an old thread. Made one like this a while ago, got mixed up.

I'm surpised nobody as asked you what the current router you have now? I ended up putting tomato firmware on my linksys. It works great and has been totally stable with an up time of a few months

Basically, you have internet in your place that you are...leasing to others in the house and they PAY you for this access and because someone actually started using what they're paying for, you want to limit their usage because you want to keep up your gaming and hog all the bandwidth. This sounds like a typical telco to me and why they're soon going to find themselves in court because of it. If they're paying you for access, they have the legal right to use it. If you don't like it, bring in another line exclusively for your use while at the same time not increasing their rates in order to pay for your new private line. If I was that other person, I'd be p*ssed.

As the previous poster suggested, I would consider a separate DSL line for your tenants.

What you are doing now is not legal anyway. [Consumer cable and DSL contracts specifically prohibit all forms of resale.]

It's definately not illegal. At least, there is no law against it anywhere I know of. It would probably be against some term in the contract you signed with your ISP though.

The likelihood of them coming after you for this is slim. Even so, they would probably just disconnect you.

kevnich2: That depends on how they agreed on it. If it was agreed to let tenants SHARE the connection, such torrenting would qualify for hogging in my book, at it consumes much more than the fair share AND impedes other's use. It's not like the OP promised a full x Mb dedicated line -- probably.
