Most of my problems always happen AFTER I've loaded Windows Actually, if you have all of the drivers for your components, boot-up disks, etc then you can expect the installation to go pretty smooth.
Helpful suggestion: After you've loaded win98 as well as a handful of the necessary apps you'll need (ACDsee, winzip, the latest Windows updates, etc) use something like Norton's Ghost and make an image file of your installation. Burn it on to CD and safely store it away. If something goes wrong later on and you don't have the time or don't weant to spend the time to fix it, then you can load the image file and be back up and running in 20 minutes.
I usually load everything I use (minus games)and make a compressed image file using ghost. It takes a few minutes longer, but I can compress a ~900-1000 MB installation and compress it to ~640 MB. Perfect for CD. You can also make it bootable using Adaptec Easy CD Creator or something like it to save you more time in the future.
Good luck tonight.
