Hey can you lock a folder in XP so that no one but the "administrator" only account can see the folder. I know u can do it with my documents folder but i want to hide another folder thats not owned by anyone in perticular. is there a way??

with or without password...any type of lock will work. I would just be happy if from my other accounts i just cants access the folder except from the "admin" account in XP

TIA

If the partition is NTFS, you can encrypt the folder with the Administrator account to prevent anyone but the Administrator from accessing it.

Remember to make a copy of your encryption certificate though.

Why encrypt it? Just remove the everyone permission, and assign the administrator account permission.

To sak: If the file system is NTFS, and you are logged in as a user with administrative privileges, just right click on the folder, select the "Security" tab, remove any user or group permissions you don't want to have access to the folder, and add whatever user or group you want to have access to the folder (such as the administrator account).

This is one of the most basic uses of NTFS: to keep people out of folders you do not want them to have access to.

Ok guys..I am on NTFS and i already knew that..i got to the folder right click that and then choose properties--> sharing tab ---> then in the local sharing and security click the box where it says make this folder private.

but when i do that..the click box is grayed out. is there some setting that i didnt or did enable??

also i do have 2 ppl that log on to the computer Me and my bro. but both of us are admin to the computer. and then ofcourse the administrator. could that be making a problem??

TIA

Two things. Are you running Windows XP Pro? If so, you need to disable simple file sharing to get the security tab. If you are running XP Home, you need to reboot into safe mode to gain access to the security tab. In the security tab, you can modify file and folder permissions so that only users you want can access the contents,

Krazikid may be more helpful than I am, as my experience with XP is minimal. But do not confuse "share permissions" with "NTFS permissions." You want to be using the "Security" tab, not the "Sharing" tab to access permissions. Permissions set through the "Sharing" tab only control remote access to file shares, they do not control access to folders locally.

Is there a "Security" tab when you right click on the folder and select properties?

As I said above, he must either disable simple file sharing to gain access to the security tab (XP Pro), or boot into safe mode to gain access the the security tab (XP Home).
