Contract with a phone book company to deliver phone books. I did this one year after Xmas and through the second week of January. Tis the season!

mobile development. once you are done, other than support here and there, it's all just extra incoming coming in.

good idea - that is probably my best bet. android/java would be no trouble at all, iOS/obj c would take some learning though.

i have thought about doing this but it seems most of the options with ad income are games, and i suck at graphics. maybe i can think of something else instead.

i have a game out there with ads, as well as some other apps that ads, and the income off of them is pretty miniscule. i do have "pro versions" of the apps i have with ads and people do upgrade (to get rid of ads as well as functionality), and i also have previous ones that were pay only, and probably making it pay only has netted me the most money.

but my first "real" free app with option to upgrade is still in "beta" and will be finalized by february when everyone will start downloading it, so i won't know until then if it really paid off or not trying out this new method. it's a guide for a game that doesn't come out until february but has had beta's already and is up to date with the beta, so only people who are into the beta have downloaded it. but my goal was to have a lot of downloads with good ratings by the time the full game came out, so when people search for the app at the launch of the game it's for, they will see an app that is already established and get mine instead of others.

if you go iOS, go the swift route over objective-c. i am working on my first swift app right now and it's way better than objective-c.

I knew someone with the gift of gab. He was bored and single and a software engineer. So in the winter he would work at jewelry stores as extra help. It's a commission based area and the best part is that he said most guys are more comfortable talking to another guy about jewelry. So it's a win. I'm not sure how easy or hard it is to get into this as a job. The guy I knew had experience in sales from before he did software. It's a valid thing to do.

No, but seriously - Why do you want to earn more money (specifically for the year of 2016)? Sounds more like a taxation question. Especially when you say "I NEED to make $5000 more in 2016".

well, i have a personal "stretch goal" to earn 5$k more in mostly passive side-income every year for a few years. that would allow me to keep saving the same amount for retirement, but also let me do some stuff i want to do like international vacations.

You sound smart enough to be one of the few here with a decent sized nest-egg to be able to go places if you choose. So I'm just curious why you need a sudden $5k more.

thanks, i guess i probably do. but with my memory as bad as it is, i'm not sure how long i'll be able to keep up the job. if it holds steady i should be fine for 20 more years, but if it deteriorates it might eventually mean the end of my normal career.

so passive income + investment income might have to replace normal income

And what percentage of apps get more than zero downloads? How many get 100+ as a percentage?

i have no clue. make something that people want and you won't have that problem though.

my 2nd latest free app with pro version has just under 12k downloads on android.

the latest one i mention (that is about 5 months old) has just under 11k downloads on android alone, the apple dev center is closed for the holidays so i can't check on that one right now.

you will never know until you try.

oh yeah i forgot about swift. i did take a half-day session at a tech conference and it was much easier to understand at first glance than objective C.

ios development now (compared to when i started in 2010 on the side) is a lot better. the apps i have out there are pretty much based off a framework i started back in 2010 that has evolved, and i still use it to this day, and it's using objective-c and old xib files. i could port the whole thing but i have so much code that taking the time to do wouldn't really be worth it, especially with limited time i have for these right now.

but this new project i'm working on (that is also a lot more involved than my little apps, and something we're hoping will become very big and definitely has the potential to) is all done in swift using cocoa pods and using storyboards instead of xib files for the views. it's much easier and streamlined now compared to the old way.

i can tell you though that since 2010, i've averaged over the $5k/yr you are looking to make. it's slowed down a lot the past few years because of more competition in my niche market, but the initial run (and why i started mobile dev, because i saw an opportunity in this market) i was pulling in way more than $5k/yr.

EDIT:

if you have any questions about it also feel free to PM me.

your house's driveway can become someone else's parking space for the day, while you are out at work. there's a website for that, google should help you.

You can just steal graphics from Nintendo, then pull the app off after you cashed out but before you get a C&D letter. It worked for flappy bird.

I need to learn mobile development too, as much as I prefer server daemon type programming where I don't have to worry about any type of graphics, it seems mobile is the bigger market to get into these days. Time waster games seem to be popular too, it's just the thing of coming up with something simple and fun.

iOS apps is obviously the correct answer. Don't bother with Android users, they don't have money.

Theater projectionist/barista/bartender or any other menial job where you get tips and/or free stuff is also doable, but requires you to leave the house.
