I've been looking all over for this... I've seen it on some laptops, so I know it can be done somehow... either thru a registry hack or 3rd party app.

I do not want it to hibernate/sleep/turn off, i want it to lock like Win+L.

I would suggest trying a local policy. I've never tried it but I'm sure there is a policy to lock the screen on a certain event (probably would be on susepnd, power save mode, etc). I know there is one to lock it after a certain amount of time.

This is the closest thing I can think of:

Power Options -> Advanced Tab

Check the box for Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby

Set the dropdown box "When I close the lid of my portable computer" to Stand by

We have a winner.

I don't want it to standby tho

I want it to maintain all network connections - standby loses them.

Why not create a batch file that you can run when you resume from standby that will reconnect all network connections?

My only other suggestion then is to just set the option I mentioned above for closing the lid to do nothing and make sure you have it set to never standby or hibernate.

It doesn't take that long to hit the windows key and L button to lock it before you shut the lid.

Yeah, I know... but I'm lazy and I know some laptops do it so there has to be a way.

I have no problem with the laptop continuing to do what ever it is supposed to do with the lid shut. I have "Hibernate" unchecked, and "Do Nothing" when the lid is closed. What that does is simply turn off the LCD screen. (There is a little button you can test that with - it is what the pid pushes on when it closes.) The computer stays alive as it was - Wi-Fi link functioning - LAN cable link functioning - external devices stay connected. I really don't know what would be gained by "locking?" Just open the lid and you are 100% back in business. Why lock if no one can touch the keyboard while the lid is closed?

How about if you set the screen saver to come on after 1 minute and click the "On resume, password protect" button on the screen saver tab?

Someone could come by, open the lid, and do whatever they wanted since I'd be logged in at that point. The locking is for security and peace of mind.

Would be rather annoying when I'm actually trying to use it and I think for a minute

Why not just ctrl+alt+del then press enter, then close lid.

I've gotten so used to doing this, i dont even think about it anymore.

Because I know theres a lazier way to do it

Besides, Win+L is faster.

That's an easy fix - lock up the laptop in a drawer or cabinet or take it with you.
