When did we last have them?
Yeah, it's been a couple years at least.

I wouldn't consider it spam. We used to do that in the SETI classic days if we noticed some one had flatlined.

it's clear that a noob who just heard about boinc, folding or DC will be lost in a neverending list of projects. The boinc project list @berkeley is well done and easy.
In our sticky we must concentrate on a few strong projects that WORK, never let a noob try an alpha project as his first project!

A good idea would be to take the projects with a short description for which we have daily stats, that way a new user will have no trouble identifying himself with the forums as his name is listed every day in the stats. He'll learn about other smaller projects very quickly.

I have been thinking a lot about BOINC and the affect it has had on the DC culture and all.

I know there are some who sort of consider BOINC a project in itself and watch their combined stats with little regard for the particular projects they have run to earn them.

Would this be a possibility to help newcomers avoid being overwhelmed?

Maybe if BOINC were presented as a single 'project' and then all the cool choices within were treated like individual configurations rather than trying to hawk a gazillion semi-obscure projects....

It seems like it might mend some of the fragmentation (if you will) that has diluted the DC community, and the corresponding staunch teamwork we used to experience here at AnandTech. (Actually, DC everywhere.... not just here.)

I see what you're saying, I think maybe the daily TA stats could achive similiar goals?

Whilst there are a lot of projects we have a large portion of our team on a handful of projects, F@H, S@H & R@H.

Post some stuff in OT. I ventured in here by accident and started reading up on what this whole DC thing was, and now I have BOINC installed running some stuff. I don't have much of a PC, but every little bit helps right? I think folks just don't know about it and would be able to help out a bit if they knew what it's all about.

Stickied threads would help lots, I think, but when they have been there too long the tendency is to overlook them. Maybe put them up for 2-3 weeks every three months or so?
Yeah, stickies in a few of the forums is a good idea, but only for a short time. People do tend to ignore them if they're there too long.
As some one mentioned, these would be good:
CPUs and Overclocking
Video Cards and Graphics
maybe a couple others
maybe OT also

edit-
fixed my errors in bold

I would also have them try to set up a Tab in the "Home" page as well.....

I always liked the way BOINC stats were organized at that site

But, I was really thinking more in terms of recruiting than stats reporting.

Basically I was suggesting to recruit people to join BOINC in a single concerted effort rather than separate recruiting efforts for each of the miriad of BOINC projects indvidually.

As far as stats postings are concerned, usually a post with a nothing but a link doesn't garner the same attention as a post created in, by, and for AT folks to ponder. The conversations in those posts might be a good place to indroduce and discuss the individual projects, etc...

Maybe this could work.

I think we should then make up a list of projects that have proven to be trustfull. Criteria could be for instance reliable connections, enough workunits, achievable project goals, etc.

IMO, that should make the choice for new teammates a little easier.
If a new member chooses for a project that is down frequently or has an irregular supply of wu's, he could easily be chased away from DC forever.

Ofcourse, we shouldn't forget about the other non-Boinc projects (SoB, OGR, RC, etc.) But once someone is grabbed by DC, he/she is bound to search for some other challenge in another project overtime.
First priority, IMO, is getting new blood/power into the TeAm.

Times have indeed changed, but the forums always have been slower in response speed to most and that has a huge impact.

I havent been here but to visit the last few years

This is my take not anyone else's

folks need answers even if its sorry mate i havent a clue maybe someone will be along that does, and glad to have you aboard. (get people talking they forget they have problems lol)

If there were a focus ( but this has never been what the goal of anandtech was its always been a crunch what you want even if it hurts site) to where the TeAm crunched you might see different results but there again lack of participation on the postings etc would have a deadly impact as well.

Being spread out is very overwhelming and each team group etc is grasping at getting more members but the silence at times is deafening

the forums have always been rigid and stiff, and geeky lol

i mean no harm in this its one reason i am drawn back so often to just surf and read about your accomplishments (Great job and gratz to all)
