How to monitor internet traffic.

I am looking for some program to monitor all my internet traffic by program and download and upload speed if possible.

But since I have running programs that I need I want this to be passive monitoring only and so that it would not interfere with any connections in any way, I just want to know what is there.

Can this be done for free or is this quite expensive if it even exists.

Thanks

The most popular program is MRTG.
I don't think it can differentiate up and downstreams though...unless you have outbound and inbound traffic on two different interfaces.

I does do inbound/outbound, but not per application. You would have to start sniffing/catorgizing pretty high up the stack, and even then it's probably iffy.

ISA 2004, for Windows Server 2000 and 2003, gives traffic by user, by application, and by destination, in its default reports. However, I don't know how it could handle "download/upload speed". You'd have to use the Windows Firewall Client to get the Application information. The Firewall Client only works with Windows PCs. For Macs and Linux, you'd only get the total traffic by client and the web traffic by destination (if you use ISA as a web proxy server).

But ISA's not free.

I downloaded Net Stat Live which works to monitor all my traffic.

I have not got MRTG working yet, I need to set up the config files when I figure out how.

I don't think I can use ISA 2004 or Cacti as I don't have a server OS or any of required software.

To clarify what I am looking for. I sometimes have connection slowdowns or hangups on my system and I would like to try to track the source. If bandwidth is used but it is going nowhere, some other program or service is using up all the bandwidth.

Something like currports which gives all connected port information, but with actual bandwidth added on. And maybe even monitor dropped packed to see if that may be causing problems.

I will see if I can find something else and try what I already have.

Thanks everyone.
