win2k has encrypting, so thw win2k machine needs to set up a sharing allowance for the win98 machine. this is what i did for my win2k to in 98 connect, only mine was over hub instead. this worked out for me

Did you make sure you both computers have the same workgroup? Have you tried pinging each other's IP? You can install netbeui but it wont help you much if all you want to do is play games. Like what Frosty said, you have to add his machine to your Users/Groups list. Look for it in Control Panel - Admin Tools.

Try changing the Win9x puter to a "Client for Microsoft Networks".

2 things,

Just make sure all the puters have the same workgroup,

the other is to enable the Guest login under Users!

With the Guest login disabled (by default) you may be able to see the other puters, but no talky talky...

Godd luck bro,

You've got to install the netbeui protocol. How to resolve a computer name without the old fashion netbios? Can tcp/ip do the trick, without WINS server? It's midnight now I can't think very hard (and a bit confused). Anyway, does your game have to run over tcp/ip connection? I thought most lan multiplayer games can run over ipx protocol, but again, it's quite late now, and I'm not sure.

I've put together puters with many versions of Windows, (3.11, 95, 98, NT4, ME, 2000), on same lan, sometimes with server, sometimes all peer-to-peer, netbeui and tcp/ip all worked.

All you need to do is set up a User on the Win2K box for him, and for the password you need to use the same password as he uses to logon to the network.

One question that I have is does these game require you use IPX/SPX? Some games still require you that you use this protocol.

Make sure that crossconnect cable is good it only takes one wire in the cable to go bad to make the connection buggy. and thats what it sounds like to me is happening.

make sure both computers have tcp ip installed for the network card

and the only settings for tcp/ip that you should be concerned about are the ip and subnet mask.

also make sure both computers have file and printshareing enabled.

also make sure client for microsoft is installed.

after that is all complete

to test

go to command prompt use the

ping command and ping the other users ip and your own to test your network card and ip stack (c:\ping 192.168.0.1)

on both machines

If you setup both computers correctly and they still cant ping each other than it is safe to say that Hardware is the issue and that could only be two things. the network card not likely if windows sees and the loopback ping worked correctly. so that only leaves the cable as the culprit witch is what I suppected was the problem all along.

Try this out and let us know.

If the W2K box has the NIC card at 100Mbps (half dup, or full dup, you didn't say?) what is the Win98SE NIC set?

You know, I've got two computers and one is W2K the other is Win98...and I do use a CAT-5 Crossover patch cable, same as yours...but I have been adviced that to get 100Mbps, you need a a 10/100 hub, which are expensive...that's why I've got both pcs at 10Mbps full dup.

I have experenced what you had said, W2K at 100Mbps...sure it'll run that way, but even if the W98 NIC is also at 100MBps, they won't see each other...on the crossover patch cable...that's why both PC NIC's (CNET PRO120 MXIC chipset) at at 10MBps full dup and they work and see each other this way.

Maybe you can try that.

OK...I'd like to thank everyone for the help...but some questions you ask arent ot the point..heres what i ahve done since last nite...first off i went into crontol panle and computer management and added a new workgroup my freind had this problem so to keep it simple i named the workgroup MPS ..so after that i madea new user called alex and password alex....so then i added him to my workgroup and myself also just added the everyone and guest users to the workgroup because that should work anyways just to be safe...after that I have no idea how to log on to the workgroup at windows startup..do i ahve to make a new user? becasue mine just logs into windows doesnt say im logging into any workgroup...also the machine im setting up with is not currently near me i have to go to my friends house so ic ant set anything on it yet..all i knwo is he has mediaone cable connected to his 3COM nic his is 10/100 and my nic is netgear 10/100 they both work fine because his cbale works and i hooked my homemade crossconnect cable to my sisters win98 system and got 10 mbps im surprised ig to 100 mbps at alex's house...so i ave the IP's set my protocol is TCP/IP with netbios enabled over it..i dont have ips/spx protocol installe di uninstalled that just for my tcp/ip games thats all they basically use...so i know my cable is good the users are set up right and the netowkr cards work fine...all i ahve to really worry about is his setting can anyone give me check list in a reply telling me what i need to check for in his nic settings and protocol settings? also how to make his computer log on to the workgroup.

i've had the same problems when trying to network a win2k machine with a win98. just make sure u got everything configured right, especially the ip addresses and the workgroup. now, if u do all this, u should be able to ping both comps. if u can ping both comps, then you've successfully established the connection. now you can go play games and do whatever. however, from my experience, the win98 will probably have trouble "seeing" the win2k machine in network neighborhood. so if u ever wanna share files etc. give the win2k machine full access to the win98 machine. this way the win2k can both read AND write to the win98. even though you've probably read this, here are the general steps to setting up a network, note: the ips can be almost anything
firstly, make sure tcp/ip is installed and properly bound to yur nic
1) set ips to 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2
2) subnet to 255.255.255.0
3) set to client for microsoft networks and enable file/printer sharing
4) make sure both on the same workgroup
5) restart the comps

sometimes u gotta reboot like 2-3 times to get on the network.
good luck
