how to politely ask someone to pay back money?

I know this guy thru a girl I was dating. We (3 of us) went out to dinner once and he didn't have enough cash so I spotted for him. (of course, gotta impress the girl right?)

well, I stop seeing the girl and now I want the money back. so how can I politely ask him to pay me back? I have his phone number, so I don't have to go thru the girl. I know where he works and lives too. He's an okay guy, I don't mind take the money he owes and then spend it on booze with him.

edit: and, if you don't know the guy and you're not seeing her anymore...just call him up and say that you want your money back.

You could drop him a note saying something like "I realized you might not have had a way to get in touch with me concerning the $X I loaned you for dinner when you, Missy and I ate at Chez Greaseball restaurant, so I thought I'd drop you a note with my address."

That way it doesn't imply he's a deadbeat, and you give him the benefit of the doubt.
