How to power dual monitors?

Hey guys, I can't seem to find a definitive answer for this.

I want to buy two XStar DP2710 monitors (2560x1440) and do a dual monitor set up. These monitors have ONLY a single DVI-D Dual link input. The description also says it is not possible to use any HDMI or DP to DVI-D adapters, so the source MUST come from DVI-D.

Is it possible to achieve this with just the onboard graphics of an LGA1151 motherboard, or will I have to buy a separate video card? I'm looking to build a Skylake PC, and will probably not be doing any or very much gaming on it.

If possible, could you provide me with part numbers for motherboards that will let me do this?

You might also be able to search for motherboards with dual DVI outputs, but I haven't seen any recently because DVI is not as popular anymore as it used to be.

That mobo probably only supported single-link DVI and the 1440p monitors will require dual-link. You should consider finding a video card that can support multiple dual-link DVI connections.

You can use a dp to dvi adapter, but good results are not guaranteed.
The passive type of adapters (~$30) seem to have poor results @ 2560x1600 60Hz. You might be OK with 2560x1440. You might even be better if you limit your output to 30Hz.
The active type of adapters (~$100) will have an additional wire for power and some additional circuitry to give much better results. Of course, that is an additional $200 since you have 2 monitors.

I would strongly suggest finding different monitors with better connection options.
It's 2015 - we shouldn't be trying to drive high resolution monitors with fat, stiff cables and unwanted adapters.

If you can find a similar monitor with dvi and either hdmi or dp, then you wouldn't need to worry about the motherboard as almost all new motherboards would support this.

Whwat jack said........ toss that VGA aside and get a real video card. not this vga stuff,, that tells me its a old mobo and video card.. You have considered buying a 560 or 760 or 960

Then you will have 2 dvi and hdmi and Display port... DVI to VGA will look crappy on your monitor, washed out text etc. VGA is soo 1990's.


Upgrade time instead of stressing about this.

I have a question regarding Dual monitor setups,

I'm running a GTX 960, GALAX EXOC to be exact. It run's games on single monitor jsut fine, do you think i can power dual monitor gaming/work with it? I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, im still new here

When you say dual-monitor gaming, what do you mean? Most people don't bother with that sort of thing due to the bezels right in the center of what you'd be looking at.

Also, for work/productivity/etc. it will work just fine.

I like gaming on the main screen, and playing TV or movie on the 2nd screen. But multi-monitor gaming-only, then I would do triple screen so you have a nice unobstructed middle screen view at the center.

You'll probably want to get a Geforce 600 or 700 with 2xDL-DVI outs, or a similar 5000-6000 series Radeon.

I'd recommend checking the classifieds for some older video cards. Since you're comparing to integrated graphics, even a 400 series from nVidia or 4000/5000 from ATI should do the trick
