How to prevent Windows 10 from rebooting automatically?

If Microsoft was a person, I'd punch them in the face. Hard.

Windows 10 needs to stop taking control of my computer. It is my computer, not Microsoft's, and having it reboot against my will is so stupid that I'm at a loss for words.

My computer runs pretty much 24/7. I almost constantly have tasks running and unsaved work, and yet Microsoft finds it alright to simply shut everything down whenever it finds it suitable. I can't be babysitting my computer 24/7 to prevent this from happening, and obviously that should never be required in the first place.

I have tried shutting off the "Schedule a time" setting under "Restart options," but that doesn't change anything.

How do I stop these absurd automatic restarts from happening? I just want to gain back control over my own computer for crying out loud!

Disable the Windows Update service? If that achieves your objective, I'd advise regularly re-enabling it to install updates though.

Downgrading to a more manageable version of Windows is another option. Win7 and Win8x provide more choice for update installation.

Tell all the idiots over the last 20+ years to actually update their Windows machines so that MS wouldn't have had their hand forced?

With that out of the way, I really hop that MS is working on a more seamless update experience closer to what *nix has.

You can still use group policy on Windows 10 to disable automatic download and installation of updates (which is what I assume is causing the reboots).

Open gpedit.msc as admin (you can use an admin command prompt for this if you like).
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update

Right click the "Configure Automatic Updates" entry and go to edit.

You have several options which are listed in the information box but if you want to completely disable automatic download and installation just set the policy to disabled in the top left, hit ok and reboot.

This may only work on Pro (and above?) versions.
