How to protect important documents

Another thread got me going on what I do. Thought I'd start a thread on the basic concept - any two of these three can reproduce the other if lost. Having recently been married, name changes, social security stuff and others made me really appreciate this action I've lived by.

3 things that you can easily replace as long as you have the other two.
  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • SS Card
------------------------
  1. Store at least one at home, in safe place, generally your passport as that takes the place of a state issued ID AND federal ID. I counts as both.
  2. Birth certificate - normally only needed for the most official of business, store in bank lockbox/safe with copy backup at home, another copy with trusted party
  3. SS card - original at home, copy at bank safe
  4. Passport - original at home as you'll need this more than any other, copy at bank and trusted party. Get and store the new passport card in bank.

Ever heard of a fire-proof safe?

Ever heard of a hurricane, earthquake, thief or tornado?

The goal here is to be able to easily protect and reproduce official federal and state documents. What do you do with stock certificates? How do you PROVE you own them?

Do you just say "oh, hey, it's in the computer system, that proves I own them". How about your property? "oh, hey, it's in the computer system".

A thief isn't going to walk off with a 80lb+ safe. I keep all mine in a fire-proof safe. We get no hurricanes or tornadoes here and no thief is going to walk with an extremely heavy safe.

80# safe? That would be pretty easy to walk off with.

For real. That's a put on shoulder carry out.

Zero - you have no SS card, no passport, no birth certificate as they have been stolen. Now go through the process of recovering all of them. You have a credit card and a state license I assume? Use those, see how much it takes. I'm trying to help here.

If I've learned anything on legal matters, especially federal and state shit - ORIGINALS MATTER. Do you have any idea what we needed to provide to SS and Passport authority to get her name changed? Why do you think these ORIGINAL documents are NOTORIZED and stamped?

I'm guessing you guys haven't picked up something that heavy and something metal that's square. Not that easy to carry out at all.

Of course I have. When I was younger I could bearhug 3 100# bags of flour and carry them, and I'm sure I've moved 80#+ cubes in one of the million times I've moved. I may not WANT to move an 80# box, but with a likely payoff inside, that's good motivation.

Ummm, I was a mover to make money in the summer. I'd pick that thing up, sling it over my shoulder and ask you "where you want it?".

I'm not kidding. The entire point of this thread is to help protect and recover documents. You're not helping. I've just wiped out everything in your safe.

What are you going to do and explain how you can recover?

I worked at Home Depot for years lifting the 100lb bags all day. It's not that easy to walk around with something that heavy but you guys are super men.

While we're e-peening, if true that is damn impressive. I'd have to sling them on my shoulders.

No, I'd be a thief that wants to make a good score. If I was in a house, and saw a small safe on the floor, I'd stop and give it a test lift. Anything around 100# would be going with me. This is especially true if I were a suburban thief. They usually come in a utility van to "fix your appliances".

All I have to do is get that safe to the car. What is that? 200 feet at the most?

You failed to answer my question about the loss of all identification except what you carry in your wallet which would be likely a credit card and a drivers license. Now go recover SS card, Birth Certificate and Passport.

Just try.

Bearhugging isn't that impressive. It's a shorter lift than putting them on your shoulders, and I have long arms. A guy I worked with could carry 4 100# bags on his shoulders, and load them himself :^O

Since you seem to know what you're talking about. I could sling 2 100# bags on my shoulders and that's about the best I could do, but I could take them up the stairs, out to the truck. And it sucked, and I only did it as a dare to show the newbs.

Yet another "spidey is paranoid about everyone coming in and stealing his identity because he thinks he's more important than he actually is" thread.

That's pretty impressive. I'll qualify my claim to say I couldn't do that all day long or anything. I'd do when we got a delivery, or when I had to move a bunch of bags into the kitchen, but I wouldn't be able to sustain that for long periods :^)

And you'd be wrong about the determination of thieves. Back when my parents owned their construction company, we had TWO portable generators weighing at least 150lbs stolen from our secure storage yard. Cut through the fence and marched them across an active railway line. Anybody else think barbed wire is redundant?

I think if you're that worried about stuff getting stolen, or damaged in a flood, a safe-deposit box at a bank might be the best bet.

But what about if the bank robbers wanna come in and drill through the safe and then drill through the safety deposit box to get to spideys social security card????

Some people are too paranoid. You're never going to be 100% safe.

I'd be perfectly fine if the perpetually fearful all went underground into their own gun-laiden bunkers and let society be run by people with actual intelligence.

I completely agree with spidey07. That said, I don't (currently) follow it, because I don't yet have a passport, seem to often need my social security card, and birth certificates seem to be easy to replace.
