How to recover a partition

I just tried merging two partitions using Partition Magic 8.0, after "shifting files" there was an error and ended prematurely. Now I am left with this partition that is unallocated with all my files in it. Is there an easy way to recover the data or reinstate the partition back to how it was before?

You have to try recovery by using PM. Using a different program could ruin the data. You might want to try Partition Commander next time. It's easier and reliable. If the data is very important you might want to search for Data Recovery software like Ontrack

This happened to me this past week but I anticipated this so I backed up everything prior to trying to merge the two partitions together. Partition Magic sucks.

I don't think so, I use PM8 with 100 percent success. You just have to know how to properly use the program.

partition magic has a bad habit of trashing your hard drive (kind of) in certain curcumstances. The worst is if you have a power outage or if it hangs up during a resize operation and you power down and reboot. Your hard drive will no longer be accessable.

BUT...

all of the info is still there and safe. Download ptedit from the symantec web site and change the partition type from 0x3C back to whichever file system you are using. The 0x3C (it'll show up in ptedit as 3C) designates a powerquest partition so the OS won't try to modify it. The menu selection at the bottom has all the info for the different types of partitions.

so, you might want to check the partition type before you reformat and start over.

Your partition table has been hosed. I agree with the "partition tragic" comment too.

Same happened to me, your data is still there.

Check this to see how I got my stuff back.

The above method is much easier than it seems.

I do think so. The amount of times that software screws something up is just too much.

You just have to know how to properly use more low-level partitioning utilities.
