How to Recover files lost after a SYSTEM RESTORE??

A friend with XP Home used the SYSTEM RESTORE function to restore a slow operating system. In the process the friend lost all her Outlook emails and her My Docs folder. What is the best way ( if there is a way) to recover those files lost when she performed the Restore function?

None of those files should be touched during a system restore, so that seems odd.

You can undo a successful restore, and failed restores are automatically undone. Just go into system restore again, and there should be a restore point that was created at the time of the original restore.

Look for the Documents and Settings folder for that user. Sometimes if a user account is created and the same name already exists as a folder, the new one is named <username>.000. Likely the old one is still there untouched but it is pointing at the newly created folder rather than the correct one.

out of curiosity, how would you make it look back at the original one instead of the user.000 one? ive seen this issue come up when i reassign systems on a domain before, but never took the time to read up on it.
