I've used many remote apps for tech support. If your looking for something 'free' that works well I recommend VNC. Don't waste your time with apps that have a 30day eval unless u actually plan on making a purchase for one of them.
A side note with VNC, your remote client will need VNC Server installed and YOUR machine will need VNC Viewer. (free version contains both)

VNC Server uses port 5900 as default.
As for firewall, have your user disable firewall while your doing the troubleshooting then turn it back on when your finished.
