how to see how much memory a certain app is using

I am experimenting with smart pointers and I want to see how much memory my app is using, I don't care if it's kernel memory, user memory, virtual memory or any of that stuff, I just want to know how much memory it's using, period. Is there a command I can use where I jsut put in the process ID and get it?

ps aux sorta works but it only shows the percentage, I want the actual amount, preferably in bytes.

ps aux shows it... vsz and rss columns (virt & resident)

top? htop if you want fancier.

top seems like the best bet then, to get the total memory would I just add virtual res and shr? Was hoping for something that does it for me, but suppose I could always write a script for that.

No, VIRT is the total amount of virtual space allocated so that might work by itself. RES is the resident set size and SHR is the amount of shared memory. Generally you just want RSS or VIRT. But you have to remember that all of the virtual space allocated might not be physical memory usage.
