How to set up Power Management

I'll be building a new rig this week, and I want to be able to go to S3.

I seem to remember, at some point when trying to get an older box to do it reliably, that it was important to set the BIOS Power Management settings correctly before first installing WinXP. Once WinXP was installed, it was too late and couldn't be changed (easily).

Does this ring any bells for anyone? Link?

Hm.. I'm not so sure if this is what you are after.. but from what I can remember if you disable ACPI from the bios then install windows then enable, OS won't boot. You either have it on or off before fresh installation of Windows.

You have to have ACPI enabled to have S3 (lol I think.. can't really remember.. it was very very long time ago). ACPI stands for ADVANCED CONFIGURATION AND POWER INTERFACE.

Does S3=hibernation? You're obviously worried about power consumption. I'm assuming this isn't a high-powered gaming rig?

Hibernation under WinXP is just about as powered down as you can get without pulling the plug out.

Yeah, S3 is suspend to RAM. I want to be able to leave the computer on and have it go to sleep using minimal power and ideally spin down the fans and HD for noise.

It's not a gaming rig, but what does that have to do with it?
