To my knowledge, there's no way to replace the MS Exchange server with any Linux solution. All I can tell you is that Ximian offers an Exchange connector, meaning Linux machines can connect to a MS Exchange server and use its features.

The closest you'll come to my knowledge is SuSE Linux OpenExchange Server, have a look here for more info.

Hi guys,

So u mean it's not a good idea to shift to Redhat Mail server since it has less functionality than exchange? But all I want is just to send and receive mail, which could be in text/html format !
Thx guys !

Exchange is a lot more than just sending and receiving mail. My personal opinion is that it isn't that great a program, and if all you want to do is send and receive email, I would say some Unix/Linux or Windows based email program that does not try to be your "total solution" like Exchange does would work better. I lean towards Unix/Linux simply because there are more mature email servers available for them, and since mail serving isn't rocket science, I tend to stick with tried and tested technologies, ie Unix ones. That being said, the company I work for uses Exchange and it works pretty good, and I'm 100% sure that if you know what you are doing with Windows more than Unix, Exchange will work better for you than any Unix email server.

I would go with eudora's Qpopper. It is a pretty slick program and is free to boot. All install instructions are included with the tarball when you download it.

I second that recommendation. BTW, if I'm not mistaken qpopper is not a mail server.

I would say go with Courier-IMAP. IMAP kicks POP's ass and Courier can use Maildir spools which are a lot faster than mbox when you get a lot of messages.

qpop is not a mail server -- it just provides an interface for POP3 clients. I don't know about Courier.

Courier has daemons for practically all mail protocols, all with SSL enabled versions (if you don't like stunnel) if you want.

Sorry, I must have gotten confused somewhere along the line. I use sendmail with imap and after a few hours of tweaking, I think I got it all running smoothly now. Sendmail is a beast though.

IMO, Qmail or Postfix as the SMTP server/MTA, and Cyrus-IMAP or Courier-IMAP as the IMAP server.

PS: As has been stated, Exchange is more than just a mail server, it is quite the package of groupware. It won't be easy to migrate to anything similar, unless you don't mind using a web-based system, in which case, I'd recommend you setup the above SMTP/IMAP daemons on your linux box, and then check out the HORDE project, which includes basically all the functionality of exchange and more. It's excellent groupware -- I use it in production here.

I use RH7.3 on my local mailserver here for home use and it works great! I use Postfix with IMAP for the users to access their email and I use procmail and spamassassin to sort everything out and kill off all the spam. Really works well... search google and do some reading... there is information out there on doing all this--that's how I got it all working.

Yeah, another vote for HORDE from here. Like a lot of people, I only use the IMP for webmail, but I've looked into the other parts a bit. Nicely designed stuff - good default layout, easily customizable, not too hard to set up.
