Hi,

I am a newbie to linux, and I would like to use kmail or mozilla mail. The problem that I am having is that for some reason I can't get either one to work with my yahoo acount. I know that yahoo won't send anymore incoming messages, but how do you setup kmail or mozilla to send mail with yahoo.

I have read a lot about this and I can't seem to solve it. So far when I try to send an email with mozilla or kmail, it seems that there's some problem with authentification. My password for some reason doesn't work in these two applications, but it works fine in yahoo.com

Please help me,
pitupepito

I don't use Yahoo Mail, but isn't that strictly a WebMail type account? I'm pretty sure that Mozilla/KMail only handle POP3/IMAP mail.

I have also tried to use mozilla to send email through yahoo, but I get some kind of error telling me that I have problems with authentification. But my password is correct.

Please help, and thanks again.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but yahoo mail does have a pop server that can be accessed through kmail or outlook or any other pop client.

It's pop.mail.yahoo.com

Yahoo Mail doens't offer POP3 or SMTP support unless you pay for it

for sending mail i use my ISP's SMTP server (example SMTP.ISP.NET) - authentication, in many cases, is not required since you're on their network
and for receiving i use YahooPOPs! it acts as a POP3 server - there is a linux verison also
but currently yahoopops is down until the next revision is released

Pitup.....

My ISP is pacbell.net. They switched me over to the Yahoo disaster but I refuse to use Yahoo as it is less powerful than what I had been using.

Yahoo mail is a simplistic subset of MSN mail with several features missing that MSN has making it superior all the way.

Instead, well, you are using Linux and that is a disaster all by itself. I use the superior XP Pro from Microsoft. No problems ever! I do e-mail with OE6.

I use yahoo because it provides 3 times more storage than msn, and I don't really care about all of its features as long as I can block a addresses and send emails. My critical thinking tells me that you are probably someone who hasn't tried Linux and its afraid to discover that Windows has all along selling crappy software. The Windows9x operating systems were very unstable compared to Linux, and WinMe was a disaster of an operating system. The WindowsNT core which was based on specific memory allocation for applications was an used first by Unix which is a lot better than Windows. Linux is a type of Unix.

Linux provides a lot better security because you don't have to deal with users having rights to install software. Linux is a robust, stable, secure and multitasking operating system. Microsoft is very afraid of Linux and Open Source and we have known that for a long time that's why now Microsoft is deciding to share its source code.

Linux file system and kernel is a lot better than Windows. Most of the servers outhere are running some type of Linux. Windows is going to have to do some drastic changes because its applications are client based and with the internet and wireless networking we need applications and operating systems that can run as servers.

If you didn't know by the way Windows used to run in Linux based servers, but then they had to stop using them for marketing purposes.

You are way wrong with your belief about Linux. I challenge you to just try it. Here is a link

That was a lot of typing!

Can somebody help me how to figure this out. I have been doing research and I would like to configure a mail client such as Kmail or Mozilla mail to send or receive mail through the yahoo. I looked at the website of Yahoo pops, but is it legal? How do you use it?

Thanks a lot for the help,

The WindowsNT core which was based on specific memory allocation for applications was an used first by Unix which is a lot better than Windows. Linux is a type of Unix.

Win9X has memory protection and virtual memory, it's just not very good at it. And IIRC there's a section of memory that's world writable on Win9X, probably some backwards compatibility thing.

Linux provides a lot better security because you don't have to deal with users having rights to install software.

Users can be given access to install software with sudo (although this would be a security problem on an untrusted box). And since users have full access to their home directory they can install software there without touching the base system.

Linux file system and kernel is a lot better than Windows

Yes and no. The Linux kernel has a better base, but there's still a few things the NT kernel does from a user's point of view. And while ext2 is ok, I think NTFS is technically a better design (I heard MS licensed the original NTFS from a 3rd party, which would make sense as to why it's half decent). Newer filesystems to Linux (like XFS donated by SGI) kick NTFS's ass, but they're not standard yet.

Most of the servers outhere are running some type of Linux.

Most Internet connected servers are running some type of unix, not necessarily Linux.

If you didn't know by the way Windows used to run in Linux based servers, but then they had to stop using them for marketing purposes.

If you're talking about Hotmail running on FreeBSD and Solaris, neither of those are Linux.

Anyway to stay ontopic that YahooPOPS! does seriously lack documention, but the sample rc file he gives looks fairly simple. It looks like you should be able to just disable the proxy and check the logs if it doesn't work. I don't have a Yahoo account so I can't try it out.

You are living in a dream world. Linux is now being targetted by the hackers quite badly lately. One forum I belong to has Linux servers and they have been hit by viruses two or three times the past couple months that shut them down for nearly a week. Second time they were down for only three days. Ever since then their servers have been buggy.

Linux is becoming Linsux.

You are totally wrong about ME. I have had it installed for quite some time on one of my computers and it is stable and runs great all the time.

>>If you didn't know by the way Windows used to run in Linux based servers <<<

Your dream world has you badly confused.

Your ISP or Yahoo should be able to tell you how to configure your e-mail program if they support it in any way. Change your ISP to SBC as they may have some configuration data for certain Linux e-mail types of programs. SBC supports Yahoo.

johnlog,

Go troll in your favorite forum then. This one is generally for assisting other members who ask good questions, not for trolls to hijack threads.

You have zero credibility for:
  • Stating Linux servers were hit by viruses. While proof of concept viruses targeting Linux exist, no real-world infections have ever been found to date. Not to mention it takes a horribly stupid UNIX admin to trigger a virus infection on a server OS. Other types of vulnerabilities exist, but your assertion of viruses is pure FUD.
  • Merely suggesting WinME is better than Linux is simply laughable. WinME is a better consumer OS, and that's about it. It loses in almost all technical comparisons, which is why it has been formally replaced with XP Home.

Any type of crack-ish type problem on Linux is the fault of the admin, just like it usually is with Windows. If you can find the names of those 'viruses' I'd be really suprised since there havn't been any Linux viruses in the wild for years. A trojan or two that attacked bind (not Linux) and apache with ssl (again, not Linux) but no viruses.

I have never uses Kmail up to 2 min ago. It took me less than 2 min to read the help (click: help button in Kmail) setting up your account to setup the mail client.

In Kmail, click: Settings > Configure Kmail

Identity - configure/give your account a name, and Email address: account@address.com

Network - add a new STMP account (or Send mail if you have a Sendmail server) and make sure your new account is the first one on the list (use up/down arrow), and add a new Pop3 or any others applicable account that you have to recieve.
Name: account name is the same as you have given in Identity,
Login: account name that your ISP given to you,
Password: given_by_your_ISP,
Host: your_ISP_mail_server.com

The above are the basic of what Kmail has to offer. Read the man page for details on other features such as encryption, bouncing & filtering.

Good luck!

Ps. I find that Kmail client is quite a slick client, but the address book is weak compare to MS Outlook contact book.

Contact CUE.COM and ask them which viruses attacked their Linux servers. Why they were down for nearly a week.

You contacted them personally about it? I'll say it again, there hasn't been a Linux virus in the wild for years, and the few that were around were basically proof of concept that didn't do a whole lot and required major stupidity on the side of the admin to get infected.

According to my DNS cue.com is still down, looks like a DNS misconfiguration from what my box is telling me. That alone says a lot about their admins and setup...
