How to share internet connection with two computers and a cdma wireless internet?

Hi! I would like to ask some assistance regarding internet connection sharing. I have two computers (1 desktop and 1 laptop) and a cdma internet access. The internet access service uses a usb connection to the computer.

My setup is that the cdma phone is connected to the laptop via usb and the laptop and the desktop is directly connected using a cross-over utp cable through their respective network cards. I have no router or switch.

I have tried using the network setup wizard several times but cant get the other computer to have an internet connection, I have also tried connecting the cdma phone to the desktop but still cant get the connection sharing to work.

Do I need a router or switch to be able to share internet connections? or do I need a straight utp cable to connect the desktop and laptop to enable internet connection sharing?

The IP address of the two computers are originally manually configured to 192.168.0.1 (the computer with the internet connection) and 192.168.0.2 as setting them to auto detect always ends up to "limited or no connectivity".

Thanks for any reply!

when you manually set the IP's, did you make sure the default gateway of the desktop (without the cdma card) is set to the ip of the laptop?

The easiest (not necessarily cheapest) way IMO is to get a EVDO router. I know Dlink and Cradlepoint both have some offerings, not sure who else does. I have the Kyocera KR1 router (made by DLink) and it was a piece of cake to set up and get working.

Hi bearxor! at first I did not set any default gateway, Now I have tried setting the default gateway of the desktop same with the ip address of the laptop (this is the one that has the internet connection) still no sharing of connection.

I then tried doing an ipconfig on the laptop and found two sets of ip's, one for the ethernet adapter and one for the internet connection, I tried putting the ip of the laptop's network card and then the connection's ip to the default gateway of the desktop but still cant get the sharing to work.

Any other ideas?

Second for just purchasing an EVDO router (I have the Kr2 and it's MUCH easier and supports more equipment than the KR1) but it's not cheap either, but definitely the easier way to go

OP what OS are on both of these computers? You need to bridge your CDMA and your internal NIC together and then enable ICS (this should work but again, if you have the money and want the simpler route, go with a KR2 or another EVDO router)

Hi kevnich2! I have noticed that another connection appeared on the computer that wants to share a connection, the new connection came under "Internet Gateway" and the connection's name is the same as the name of the connection on the computer that has the internet connection, but the problem is I cant browse or do a ping test on the computer that wants to share connection.

BTW how do you "bridge" cdma and the nic? it always says that i must select two nic's or two connections not related to ics.

Hi, now I can see internet connection on the client computer under "Internet Gateway" and this appears every time the computer that has the connection gets connected to the internet but the problem is I cant browse or even do a ping test.

I tried uninstalling all the protocol and left tcp/ip but still the same problem.

two good places to start.

i believe you will have to decide which pc will be configured to share internet connection as i dont think both can be at the same time, i had a std home network/wireless router i used with with a 3g setup so i think a non-crossover network cable should work between the desktop and laptop.

also a wireless network card installed in the desktop should provide internet access to the laptop.

Hi blazer, thanks for the tip, the ics is now working although I find it weird as after running network setup wizard again (ran this several times before) everything suddenly worked. To be sure I just set the client pc to dhcp but the ip remained the same with the one I configured originally.

I have already tried to use a proxy server (http://www.analogx.com/content...oad/network/proxy.htm) earlier as I am starting to loose hope to make ics work but luckily after trying one last time everything suddenly worked, I am also a bit uncomfortable in using the proxy application and it is also causing some intermittent connections.

Thanks for the replies!

I can second the recommendation on the Cradlepoint router. It's not cheap ( ~ $250 ) , but it really works well and can load balance between a Cable/DSL WAN connection AND up to 3 CellModems. I had one setup in a NYC office as an emergency Internet connection.( DSL install was delayed by a few weeks ) Had it load balancing between a USB Sprint Card and USB Verizon. We only bought the router because Sprint spoonfed a SW update that detected MS ICS we were using and killed the connection . Everytime it detected the LAN port connected, it would pop up a warning about sharing and close the CDMA connection. The Cradlepoint gives them all the finger and just works.
