There simply were no good black movies good enough to be nominated. Sorry. Will Smith and others should have acted better in Concussion (and other movies) if they want to claim faux outrage.

Except there are awards for directing, cinematography, costume design and about two dozen other categories and no black nominees for the last two years. I don't know how many they nominate for each category, but it has to be at least two, right? So out of about 100+ positions, none of them were filled by black candidates. That's quite the statistical anomaly.

BET is fine though.

Sam Smith won best new artist at the BET awards a few months ago.

He's not the best new artist imo, and he's not black. Not only does BET nominate white people who are undeserving, but they actually have white people winning too. And Sam's not the only example.

They don't need a solution because there isn't a problem.
Everyone that's offended because skin color wasn't taken into account should boycott the awards.

Actually the NFL has a system that might help... when teams interview people for coaches and other senior positions they make sure to interview one minority at least.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooney_Rule

It's called the Rooney Rule and if studios implemented it I don't think it would harm anyone.

Simple fix. Create a Best Black XXXX oscar for each white oscar win.

So if a White actor wins best actor, then also have a best black actor.

This way you have a race-neutral oscars by delta hedging all white wins with a black win.

The problem is systemic. The industry is probably mostly white, especially with the type of movies that get Oscar attention. Dozens of movies up for consideration, most of them with white crews and performers, pretty easy for minorities to get lost in the crowd or be edged out by dozens of competitors.

Then because it's a mostly white industry, that probably means fewer connections and people to look up to in the industry for minorities. That results in fewer minorities working in the industry now and in the future.

And if you look into actor/actress/director backgrounds, there are a lot of sons/daughters of rich or already successful people. Who, on average, has the most wealth in America?

Exactly. The Oscars are a white-run organization of elitists who curate a mostly white film industry with its mostly white audience. They nominate movies that were popular with white people.

It's like how Macklemore and Iggy Azaelea got Grammy nominations for best rapper even though they're pretty awful.

The only people who care about this fiasco are rich, black filmmakers who stood a chance of winning in the first place.

But really, if you don't like the Oscars, boycott them. It's a lot easier than boycotting the police and justice system when they arrest blacks at a disproportional rate.

I don't know, man. Someone in this thread already complained that BET exists.

there are some amazing white actors with or without good roles. unfortunately so many great roles go to mediocre white actors. I don't know if there is enough amazing black actors to compete out mediocre white actors (who show up to auditions in droves). so mediocre white actors win awards...go figure. we need more denzels and elbas, griers and woodards. with great roles, they are shoe-ins for awards.

this year, it was an embarrassment that the amazing black actors with great roles were overlooked.

I am grateful to the BET Music Awards, the Soul Train Awards, the NAACP Image Awards, the Essence Music Festival, and whatever else there is out there because it really opens yours eyes to how much contributions by non-whites are being ignored by these popular award shows...as well as how music other artists that fall into the categories they cover are ignored because they don't have feel good pop song on the radio.

People want to say its because minorities aren't talented enough but I disagree. Especially when it comes to music. The Grammys and the AMA's take a small amount of artists and put them on stage for awards when they aren't even the best at what they do. Seriously, I'm fucking tired of Taylor Swift being propped up like she's the best thing in music. She has like what....4 Grammys? For shit pop music about boys, breakups, and having blank spaces? It's the same people every damn year up for these awards.

People accuse the shows I named of being racist when they are actually more diverse both in nominees and music styles than these shows Hollywood are putting on. The performances are better too.

Solution:

At the end of the nomination process, have a random number generator pick a category and Al Sharpton personally selects an extra nomination for that category.

Voting remains the same.

Personally, I don't pay attention to award ceremonies because I don't give a crap about the results. So what the fuck, do whatever it does to make the NAACP less cranky. I don't care who Hollywood wants to internally celebrate and award anyways. I don't pay attention to them now, I won't pay attention to them after their updated diversity guidelines.

I was very happy that Kendrick Lamar received such attention at the Grammy's, especially when the message of his latest album is so heavily focused upon the struggles of the Black community. His performance was insane, his album was terrific, and it seems much of the Grammy's attention has agreed. I say bravo, because that was an example of the most deserving getting what was deserved.
