Idris Elba - Beasts Of No Nation
Benicio Del Toro Sicario
Mya Taylor - Tangerine
Kitana Kiki Rodriguez - Tangerine
Ryan Coogler - Creed
None of them was worth an Oscar, and yes I watched them all. The closest would have been Elba, I really do like him as an actor. Hoped he would be the new Bond. Seriously, the others? Creed? Not even close. Not when you consider the other choices.
You could have an argument if Zac Efron got nominated for Dirty Grandpa. But he didn't. Who would you take off the current Oscar list and replace with the names you mentioned? Remember this is an opinion of people, and not based on facts.
You can make a very valid argument for women, not "people of color". Do some research on the percentage in film, the percentage in America, and the percentage nominated lately. Then try again.
That's a terrible analogy.
Track & field is actually one area where it's a true meritocracy. If you can run fast enough or jump far enough, you win.
Unlike award shows where it's all politics, popularity, and personal opinions.
It is not a good analogy. Going with your other post about who not having a certain percentage in a work force, look at the NBA. Why in a country where blacks make up about 12% the NBA 78% are black? Where is the outrage in this? How many MVP's in the NBA have been white in the past 20 years? Not the same percentage as that plays the game. Where is the outrage in this? I give zero fucks because the best players play the game, and the best players win the MVP. Which is how it should always be, there should never be a "token" person for anything. The best people play, the best people win awards. End of discussion. It could easily be turned around like the Oscar "argument" about not having enough blacks in the film industry or nominated. I would have no problems if every nomination for best actor went to a minority rather than white if they were actually better, or at least could be reasonably argued that they were.
And whoever brought up the Rooney rule is ignorant to the facts. It has actually hurt the cause. Just more ignorance though.
