If your browser is patched they do not install 'even if you click cancel'. My first suggestion would be to stop browsing warez sites (couldn't resist). My second is to read the popups more carefully before making a choice. Third is to disable activex/javascript except for your trusted zone.

You know, I was gonna say that, but I refrained because if someone is browsing warez sites they should get what they deserve.

It's not just warez... A man should be able to gawk at his favorite pr0n sites without the distractions of darned popups

(the original wording of this post was toned down to a more politically correct level... darn i so wanted to use "masturbation" in this post )

Yet you continue to use Internet Exploder, and then complain about it ...

Hint: Use a better browser.

You don?t need to convert to Mozilla. As bsobel already posted, disable active scripting and Java when you venture off to questionable sites then run Adaware or Spybot to get rid of the questionable tracking cookies.

I get a pop-up when I go to www.bestbuy.com, www.cnn.com, .www.weather.com, and a heck of a lot of other non-warez websites. Judging a book by its cover probably means you know nothing about the poster!
Hmm, I don't get those pop-ups, I use Opera with "Open requested pop-up windows only" set. Also, those pop-ups on warez sites are the ones that install/reconfigure programs with confusing choices, not those on the sites you mention. If anyone wants to browse warez sites with an insecure browser (or insecure settings enabled by default), more power to them.

The funny thing is, he never even mentioned which browser he was using, we simply guessed, correctly.

And he is not referring to pop-up adds, he is refering to pop-up installers (i.e. "do you want to install gator now").
maybe i'll stick to kazaa
How about you just stick to the "clean and clear"? If you are going to go and play with fire expect to get burned every once and a while.

I've been using the updated version of PanicWare's Pop-Up Stopper - available at http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree_download.html Does a decent job of getting rid of most nasty pop ups on sites like CNN, Weather Channel, etc. Just be sure to configure the app to notify/not notify you based on your preferences when it blocks a pop-up window (personally I like the little bubble that appears above the system tray just in case there is a pop up window I actually want to see. In that case, just click the link or reload the page while holding CTRL).

To be fair, there was a couple of companies that actually exploited bugs in IE to force their controls to auto-install. (Thats why I mentioned browsing with a patched to current version of IE). There are some folks pretty unhappy with those companies, as I recall they are being sued by some of the people that got the software installed without permision.

One browser, small, slick, tabbed browsing, keys to enhance scrolling, extentions for tabbing, mouse gestures, themes so plentiful you will have a hard time choosing...

what am i speaking of? Phoenix of course, althogh the ratheads went against my will and renamed it Firebird...

Not if you have a true multi-user OS (eg, 2K, XP pro, *nix, BSD, etc.) with the proper security settings.

Number one, never trust anything that comes in a popup window unless you're absolutely sure of the source. Just because a button is labelled "cancel" doesn't mean that's the cancel button. If you want to close a popup window just hit the "X" in the upper-right of the window, or right-click on the taskbar and close it. Those options are always valid. Make sure you're actually clicking on the window, rather than some kind of image being displayed in the popup window.

Oh yes, disable java and activeX for all but trusted sites, get a better browser and get some ad-blocking software. If you don't do at least one of those (and I recommend doing all of those) you can't complain about anything that happens when you're on the net.
