You will never find me on the side of any criminal. To that end I feel that most of the peaceful people in Portland, for instance, were not criminals until they overstayed their welcome and refused to leave, for months. The police should have swept the streets with and overwhelming show of force every night a 6pm if necessary until they went home and stayed home. But you know liberal law and policy makers and their fear of appearing like conservatives on national tv. I'd have brought out the hoses and blunt impact projectiles for the violent ones. They'd have gotten the message sooner that 100+ days later.

I am more than happy for smash and grab shoplifters to get punished but does this apply to all kinds of theft? Like Trump screwing over contractors for tens upon tens of thousands of dollars then when they threaten to sue him threaten to drag it out forever knowing they can't handle protracted litigation and need whatever he says he'll now give them for the job, so they take it otherwise many of them would just go under. He became known for this in the NY/NJ area because this is where he did most of his actual development back in the day.

What about a wealthy person getting caught by the IRS for stealing say 50 grand in their taxes - shouldn't they go to jail even if they go on a payment plan? I mean they still stole. Or is jail only for those who can't afford to pay their way out.

There was no CRT outrage during the presidential election cycle whatsoever. CRT in public schools doesn't exist, but Fox started reporting on it and there were close to 2000 mentions of it in x amount of months and it became the topic for these terrible conservatives that enjoy living on ignorance and being able to hate those because of the color of their skin, or sexuality or being poor.

Difference between me and FDC is I have no problem condemning crime no matter the source. Republicans have already taken a stance that because of who the perps were they are comfortable with that day. Remember, it was just a normal tourist day? The evidence you just stated doesn't support your conclusion. If someone is upset about theft, clearly they care about it. That they aren't bemoaning the crimes you choose to focus on doesn't detract from their anger over other crimes.
Having been robbed 4 or 5 times, theft is a sore spot for me. It annoys me enough that I wonder if we shouldn't use corporal punishment instead of probation or a short jail sentence. Making theft legal hasn't worked out all that well, perhaps getting one's ass blistered would serve as a deterrent.

An even better solution would be insuring that every single person has a job and a place to live, but there would still be people that would rather steal than work.
