I’m sorry but standards of living in Texas are much too low for me. When I look at education standards, life expectancy, household income, and yes, crime rate, Texas performs poorly compared to liberal states. You think a slightly more convenient Duane Reade makes up for that? Lol.

If you would like me to consider moving there you guys are going to have to do better. As mentioned Texas has cheap housing, which I’m a big fan of, but everything else is just not up to snuff.

Plus Texas is actually pretty expensive. Sales tax can easily be over 8%, and property taxes are some of the highest in the country.

Peruse Zillow in some places that are actually livable and check out the costs.

If you want to live somewhere with low tax burden, affordable housing and actually nice, New Hampshire is way better than Texas.

I would rather not have to carry a firearm so I can shoot back at degenerates like yourself.

I havent owned any weapons since 2012. You should stick to screwing up your mind with weed and not make threats like this since they are illegal. You can have the last word as you are now on ignore.

Would having a button similar to banks help in getting police on the scene in enough time to round up the robbers?

So shooting back at active shooters is now illegal?

So much for the NRA and the whole CCW fantasy thing.

Lets just ban guns and avoid shooting all together?

Yes, prices are skyrocketing for everything now but I think thats mostly due to inflation. We do pay sales taxes where I live of 8.75% and property taxes are about 2.25% of a homes value in big cities and about 1.50% in suburbs or 1% in rural areas with exemptions if you occupy it.

So on a $400,000 home you will pay $750 a month in property taxes. Unfortunately property insurance is higher in this region due to storms that sometimes have high winds and cause hail damage. If you own a frame home it will be even higher (which is stupid, but they make the rules). If you add the cost of insurance to property taxes, you will be paying up to 4% of the homes value with a 1% homeowners insurance deductible. But we dont have SALT taxes so if you make a lot of money the difference is made up there.

These are all general numbers.

People steal for various reasons none of which really matter.

SO .... in your (apparently?) tiny little brain a homeless child stealing food is exactly the same as a meth-head mugging an old lady to get high or robbing somebody at gunpoint to take their car for a joyride?

Kindly STAY in Texas... it's where you belong.

That's a pretty high tax rate to live in a low-tax shithole. Perhaps subsidizing low income taxes for the ultra-wealthy is a stupid idea for anyone but the ultra-wealthy.

Is stealing wrong or isnt it? In your tiny little brain stealing is ok depending who is stealing? Your moral relativism is what is wrong with America. Obviously a child will be treated differently than an adult. But you knew that.

so let me get this right...prices are skyrocketing - not just inflating - but not because of the giant flood of totally not liberal californians that you claim are fleeing to texas in order to escape the commie hell that is california?

you realize that, because of the higher home prices in california, they can buy up all the real estate in texas, cash in hand? and you know what this does to prices when there's a finite supply, and a very high demand from people who are willing to hand you a pile of money, right meow - no mortgage papers, no fuss, just cash? yeah, that drives prices up.

and while this might seem to contradict my earlier claim about a good portion of new texans being young and progressive, it's not incompatible:
those who are established homeowners in california (generally going to be older) sell off their homes, have cash in hand, and are able to outbid younger, less wealthy buyers. thus preventing young homeowners from ever getting their foot in the door. so all the youngins have no option to rent, and because demand for rentals is also high (and also not keeping pace), they end up spending a lot more on rent than they otherwise might in a less distorted market. so, home ownership becomes a bit of a pipe dream for anyone <40, in high-growth areas, not bringing in bank.

one of my friends bought a house in Austin's beer district for $625k. i damn near had a heart attack when he told me that number. but he works in facebook's legal department, so i can only assume he is getting paid very, very, very well.

Never ceases to amaze how "low tax" Texas has some of the highest tax rates in the country.

Yep. People aren't moving from CA to TX because of crime rates or tax rates, because TX isn't any better than CA on either. That whole bit is just conservative wishful thinking.
The real reason people are moving from CA to TX is because of low housing prices. They're cashing out of CA to buy twice the house for half the price in TX, and they're bringing their liberal politics with them. Just ask the people in OR, WA, AZ, and NV who have already lived through this.
