From a serving and streaming point of view, locally and over the Internet are quite similar.

You have to pick the applications and the way you want to do it.

How to set the WHS for remote is in the page that I linked to. Port opening and other setting for over the Internet will depend on your choices.

Read, think, and synthesize it according to your specific needs.

Personally I like to use VLC for these purpose.

Check out Plex. It makes it pretty easy to steam.

I can't get plex to work remotely. However I can get it to work on my android phone pretty well. I'd be interested to know how the op resolves this also because I can't get it to work on my whs2011 box either. When I go to homeserver.com I can only dl the file not stream it.

I have tried a few programs before, to no avail. So i assumed it was me doing somthing wrong also..............turns out my stupid ISP blocks incoming traffic on the ports i need. Check to see if yours does too, its a real pain. So i came up with a solution that should work, just create a hamachi network hosted on your server.

I would look into plex, creating your own my plex account seems to help a lot of forwarding issues. You just want at least a dual core machine to do any transcoding.

Have you tried it yet? Plex has clients for iPhone/iPad, android, pc/Mac, roku and some tv widgets as well. It's honestly the one of the greatest apps I have used recently.
