Its my money that is paying for his health insurance.

He wraps that car around a tree, the hospital will be looking at me to pay the bills.

How long are you going to pull that line in trying to control him? He'll technically be on your plan until he's 25, most likely. You have a long 7 years ahead of you.

My son is 17 years old, turns 18 in a few months, has a job and has the money saved up to buy himself a car.

Yesterday he told me he wants to buy a 94 camaro.

Fast cars and young men to not go well together. I have heard of too many kids dying after losing control of their car and running into either the ditch or hitting a tree.

A guy I used to work with was killed on the way to work on morning. He came out of a curve, gased the car, lost control, skidded into a ditch sideways, the car hit a culvert sideways, flipped, rolled over a driveway, the young man was thrown out and died at the scene. The culvert was maybe 24 - 30 inches tall, and it was a deep ditch he went into.

There is a honda civic 4 door I would rather my son buy for about the same price. After talking to him about the 2 cars, he still wants the camaro.

I tried the "get insurance quotes and compare prices" discussion, but since he has a job he thinks he will be able to pay insurance on the camaro.

Match the amount he's got saved up if he buys something less hick-y

I am not trying to control anyone.

A few months ago 3 kids from a local high school were killed in a late night accident. A local cop gave his daughter a muscle car, she wrapped it around a tree and now the girl has brain damage.

What am I supposed to say "oh yea son, its ok for inexperienced drivers to get muscle cars "?

Good time for a life lesson. He will be working all the time to pay for insurance, he won't be able to pick up chicks in his '94 Camaro.

Let him buy the Camaro and install a governor in it. I am assuming you have been in a vehicle with him as the driver. How is he behind the wheel?

Time to let him fly. Live and learn is the only way most people learn unfortunately. If it was as easy as listenig to our parents it would be a whole different world.

I'm actually with you on this. I have a 9 year old son so I'm going to be going through what you're going through in a few years. Maybe I'll just hang onto the Maxima until he is old enough to drive. He's getting that or a Camry or something else that is safe and boring.

For the most part, high performance cars are not good cars for novice drivers. Same reason why high performance motorcycles are not good for novice riders (although, you'd be surprised by the number of people who argue just the opposite on that subject).

I had a '65 Mustang at 17-19

It had no power steering, no power brakes....4 wheel drums for that matter.

A 289 and a 4 barrel.

It started out with no seat belts. But, I added them later.

No airbags. No....well....nothing, compared to todays cars.

But, I had a respect for what a car could do.

You need to know if he is that responsible. And if he understands that ANY car is not a toy. Even a Civic that can't get out of it's own way, is still 3000lbs of steel. Add to that motion + humans and you get the point. Problem is, most people don't even realize what they are in control of. Whether it has 400HP or 100HP, the same lessons needs to be taught and understood. Sadly, in the US, you rarely see this.

I'm assuming this is a V6 with the 3.4L. It is a dog, most new cars nowadays have more power than it. Even if it is an LT1, it still isn't as fast as you think.

My first car was my '96 Firebird, bought it when I was 15 and it lasted until I was 22. It was a V6, but it was still fun and I took care of her. So long as you teach your kid responsibility and respect for the hazards of the road, he'll be fine.

Don't know your son's nature, but whatever you do don't be authoritarian about it. At 17 if my parents told me not to do something, even if they had perfectly valid reasons, all it did was urge me to do it just to spite them. Calling his choice "hick-y" may very well have the same effect if done wrong. I'd 2nd the suggestion of offering some sort of upgrade if he gets something closer to what you'd prefer. I'd say look for something like a used Audi A4 or Volvo S40/S60. They're both sedans but with a "sporty" edge to them.

How the fuck is he going to drag around a big ass smoker with a camaro? Your boy needs a truck.

BTW, op, this thread could use a few pics of your smoker and rifle.

If he's a reckless driver, it doesn't much matter what he's driving.

Once he turns 18, you can't stop him from buying it anyway. And if he's injured in an accident, your health insurance won't pay a dime, anyway.

I know you're trying to protect your son, but you can't protect him forever. Cut the apron strings, dad.

If he wants a muscle car, buy him a newer Mustang instead. Here's why.

-While not the best snow driver, the Mustang is probably the most forgiving RWD muscle car around. It's very easy to drive, with smooth handling. It goes where you point it.
-My Key: Allows you to assign separate keys for different drivers. A babysitter for your machismo fuelled teen. Allows you to limit the car's maximum speed and stereo volume.

You don't need a muscle car to do stupid things getting yourself killed. Plenty manage it in camry's etc. They don't make any cars today that don't go fast enough to easily kill yourself. So I'm not sure a non-muscle car is some sure-fire answer.

I have a son that is 15 yrs old. I wouldn't be too happy if he picked a muscle car because it may indicate that he intends to hot rod around like a jackazz.

If you son has good judgement, might be that you're worrying too much.

If my son makes/saves his own money I'd be inclined to let buy what he wants. My father did (I had a Boss 302 Mustang at your son's age.)

I hope the young man stays safe.

As cool as that is. It's like putting training wheels on it. lol. I don't really think a 17 year old needs a new Mustang anyway. Unless he can pay the payment and the insurance.

You would assume that your son would intend to hot rod and then the very same post you tell us you had a Boss 302. LOL

He's becoming a man let him be. Let him make his own decisions and learn from his mistakes. For a man picking a car is like choosing as woman. You know why you want it
